Today my friends dad told me I need to go to the gym. i grew up with my mom telling me i dont needt o gain any more weight. Im 19 years old. 130 pounds and very upset about it. My mom has in the last 4 or so months, went from 130 to 114. That makes me feel even worse about my self. I constantly feel the need to eat. I went to the gym for about 4 months but i dropped one pound in all that time so i quit, and the money was too much. ive tried dieting but the most ive ever lost in an entire summer was 2 pounds. and then if i stop or skiped a day at the gym my weight went back up. Meanwhile, the friend i went to the gym with lost around 10 pounds and dident even change her diet or anything. just went to the gym 2 or 3 times a week for an hour each time. I dont know why i eat so much, and the feeling of full is a rare situation for me and then 30 minutes later i will be hungry again. Im hoping this website will help give me some confidence, im very shy about my apreance. I dont think im fat, but i think i can be/should be skinnier.

Unless you're about 4 foot tall, 130 pounds is no where near overweight. You're not losing weight because your body doesn't need to!! It sounds like your mom may have body image issues herself. Check your BMI (under tools) if you are in the healthy range, which I am sure you are, you don't need to lose anything. Try telling your mom that. Sorry if this isn't much help.0

And i know that, but im not comfortable with my self. And having a mom who still thinks she needs to lose weight, doesent help me at all in confidence department.0

Unless your way under 5 feet tall. 130 lbs is still pretty healthy. No one has the right to make you feel bad about yourself even if they are doing it under the guise of "being helpful". People seriously need to learn when to butt-out . Do what makes you feel good and is in your own best interest.0

i did the bmi, im two pounds from being considered over weight....0

Im five foot one inch0

I'm 5ft and yes 130 is overweight. you should be well under 120. But 130 isn't that far off and you can lose the weight. You might be an emotional eater and eat when stressed. That's what I am. It takes a lot of brainpower to be strong enough to say no to that food even when hungry. Try drinking a smoothie or protein shake when hungry. They fill you up and last awhile. It has helped me to log everything I eat. Be strong. And don't be afraid to tell someone they are rude for talking to you like that.0

I would say that if you really have a HEALTHY ideal weight and you are here for yourself, then you will do just fine. If you are here to please other people, reaching those goals will be much more difficult to obtain, and then retain once you do meet them.0

Welcome to MFP! I hope you get some information that will help you gain confidence and become healthy. I would love to be 130lbs :0) Just remember you should be doing this for you- not for other people!0

No offense, but your friends' dad seems sorta creepy. Maybe there was a good reason within a conversation for him to make this comment, but it really sounds inappropriate. My mom used to not eat for long periods of time...as I grew up I finally figured out she had a problem but it is really uncomfortable for someone that close to you to tell you something like that. I'm sure she meant it as a motivator and just didn't realize it was hurtful, but you have to do things at your pace. Next time you can tell your mom you are happy for her and that you are working on you (if you feel you need to). I'm sure you are beautiful the way you are (it doesn't sound like you are overweight in the least bit). Maybe try something active you enjoy doing. The gym does get expensive really fast and I also have a friend who is frustrated that she works out constantly and never sees any weight loss. It takes time and patience and sometimes a change of diet. What I found works for me is to fake the confidence until I actually gain it. You'll never believe how many people do the same...:) I hope things start looking up!0

She said she did the bmi for her height (not 5 foot) and she is 2 pounds from being overweight, making her in the HEALTHY range.0 -
I suggest keeping with the gym... you might not need to lose weight but might want to tone up. I havent lost very many pounds but have lost 2 1/2 inches on my waist. If you cant do the gym try some kind of aerobics. I use the biggest loser challenge on the wii.0

I don't think 130 at 5'1 is an issue. That being said, if you're not happy with the way you feel, there's nothing wrong with doing a diet change and/or working out. The exercise might make you feel better, I know it works for me. The number on the scale isn't the whole story, it's how you feel that truly matters.0

Maybe you should see a doctor and have some blood tests done. It sounds like you might have low thyroid or some other issue that is causing you to "not feel full" Maybe it's boredom? You're young so it's good that you feel like wanting to do something about it now. But also think about the psychological aspect of why you feel like eating all the time. Maybe seek out a nutritional therapist? There are lots of tools out there to help you over come things like this, and you've made a great first step by joining MFP! There are so many knowledgeable and friendly helpful people who've overcome some tough struggles to lose the weight. Take charge and find out what works for you! Every day is a new day, and every day is a CHOICE to make the right decisions.0

But you all are very nice, and im sure with you alls reasurance i can do it, ( atleast i hope i can) I live in south florida and its so hot for me to go out and walk or ride my bike. i try but i cant last out in the heat very long and the gym is too expensive for me right now. Im deifniatly going to start keeping a journal of what foods i eat and try to keep track of it. i do eat alot of fruits and vegies, but i also am week for ice cream- though i dont eat it more then every couple weeks0

if you want to lose weight you have to do it for yourself, be healthy, tell people especially pushy moms ( I am a mom so I can say it) to lay off and worry about themselves, she sounds like she has confidence issues herself by putting you down you don't do that to your child0

work up to goals of time walking and biking in the heat. start out at 10 or 15 minutes and increase the time slowly.0

You are NOT overweight ! A chart isn't going to tell you if you are healthy or overweight. A BMI chart is simply a guide, which in my eyes is crap because it doesn't take into consideration muscle mass. It isn't exactly 100% accurate! So just because you are 130 and 5ft doesn't mean you are "overweight". Everyone carries their weight differently as well, so please don't use the BMI chart to determine how much weight you want to lose to be considered "healthy".
I can understand the part of not feeling good about yourself, I struggle with that too. I find that journaling is great and helps me to sort out what my true emotions and feelings are. If it is your mother contributing to why you are feeling the way you do would you ever consider counseling and at some point could invite your mother along? I am sure it would benefit you both, maybe she doesn't realize the way you feel?0 -
Just to clear things up. I don't really think BMI is overly accurate indicator anyway because it doesn't take into account the fact that some of your weight could be made up of muscle. You look at some football players they're 6ft tall and weight 100kg+ but most of it is muscle and BMI would say they are overweight.....I think not.0

your friends dad said that to you??? How on earth is it his business what size you are0

I am a graduate student single mother (i.e. I'm extremely poor) and there are hot days here when running outside is difficult.
Here are exercise alternatives I have adopted:
1. Buy free weights to keep in your home. Do the weight lifting in the early morning (before your fictional baby wakes up). Wakes you up and it's cooler in the early hours.
2. Buy a step machine or just used something that is sturdy that makes a step. I can't afford a step-machine, so I bought 4x4 wood at the hardware store and made a 2 step stair case that is sturdy and easy to move. Do the stepping in the morning with weights when it's cool.
3. Do sit ups. Sit ups are really easy and do-able anywhere in your house. If you are microwaving something or waiting for water to boil, squeeze in 10 or 15 sit ups. This way you're doing them, but not burning out (mentally and physically) by doing 100 all at once.
4. Run up stairs. When you're at work or school, RUN up the stairs, don't just walk up them.
Hope these help you get around the hot weather, you don't need a membership to a gym to exercise consistently, be efficient with your time.0 -
You're in Florida so I understand the heat issue. In that case, do you have anywhere that you could swim regularly? Swimming is a GREAT exercise and you don't even know you're burning calories because you're having fun and staying cool! On another note, everyone carries their weight differently. I have extremely large breasts so I will probably always be 10 pounds over what I would be if I wasn't large-busted. Some people have really large frames even if they are short. So take that into consideration. If you still don't feel happy with your body, just know that there is no miracle weight loss. Everything takes time and if you are just patient you will see results!0

NO ONE has the right to make you feel uncomfortable in your own body....that being said if your doing this for yourself good luck YOU CAN DO THIS it just takes dedication and consistancy.... here are some ideas to supplement or replace the cost of a gym
the gym is nice if you can afford it...but you can exercise in your own home...jillian michaels dvd's, the biggest loser dvd's, and some others are only nine or ten bucks at walmart or target with some hand weights or cans of soup or water and they give you a really good workout.... also youtube has zumba workouts on there which is italian dancing and is an awesome workout without feeling like a workout....or there's always planks, push-ups, sit-ups, squats, leg lifts, any version of crunches, and any resistance training....all of those things are inexpensive and can be done indoors in your own home, at your own pace, and in your own time frame.0 -
I remember fathers like that when I was a teenager. Some men just don't know when something is none of their business.
I would love to be 130lbs, that's my goal. You aren't overweight so stick your fingers in your ears and go na na ni na na I can't hear you, at people who tell you you are.0 -
First of all, welcome to My Fitness Pal - we've all found the site for similar reasons - we needed help. And I think it's a great place to be.
From everything you've said, I think it sounds like a great goal for you would be to be stronger - not physically and mentally. So maybe some hand weights, calisthenics and walking will work for you, along with a high protein and high fibre diet.
Secondly, I'm sorry you are surrounded by unaccepting people. I don't have much advise on that front, aside from saying that you should tell them how they make you feel, and tell your friend's Dad to mind his own business (seriously - he's in no position to comment). As you get older try and surround yourself with positive people - this negativity will fall to the wayside if you do that.
Friend me if you like - I'm always here to lend support. But beware, even on My Fitness Pal there are bullies among the the good people.0
