I've started walking to boost my weight loss as I have a small child & one at school so going to the gym is pretty impossible! I drop off at school then walk approx. 4 miles pushing pram and with the dog. The balls of my feet just just below my big toe are really sore though. Does anyone know anything that will help or prevent this? I've tried changing my footwear from Crocs flip flops - which are normally 100% comfy to my trainers but it hasn't really made much difference. Any help or advice would be much appreciated as I want to keep going now i've started. :-)

I would recommend getting some shoes that are designed for walking...that way your feet will be cushioned :) Otherwise you could try some inserts...

the balls of ur feet will harden if you maintain this activity. I use to sit alot and when i first started working on my feet they use to kill me. Now im use to it, it take alot to hurt my feet. Also THICK socks help while your getting use to it.

Thanks. I was thinking of trying some gel inserts - they always worked for nights out dancing!! Thanks again.

Oh and if you are using walking shoes, maybe you need new ones? Or maybe they are not the right kind. I don't know a lot about walking shoes but I know for running there are different kinds depending on the way you run...so maybe there is something like that for walking? Maybe go to a store where they know their stuff and get someone to help you?

They're just normal trainers or my trusty croc flip flops that have never hurt before! I may have a visit to Go Outdoors as i've heard they are quite good for advising/fitting walking shoes/boots.

if you're interested in real comfort - I would look at Spira shoes. They have springs in the heal and under the ball of the foot. These springs have kept me from hurting - in my feet or legs! as I've started running. They're well priced and they last for a longgggggg time. If you're interested, drop me a message.

I became a runner at age 35! The very fist difficult lesson I learned was to never take a walk (over a mile) in my normal, everyday "comfy" shoes, trainers, flip flops, sandals, etc. My feet blistered so badly... even in my most comfortable sandals! My girlfriend stressed that I get proper running shoes... go and try many different styles on, ask questions, and make sure to buy them a 1/2 size larger than you normally would for everyday use. Yes, 1/2 size bigger!! You will need the extra room in the end near your toes, and after a couple of miles, feet & hands will swell a bit.

Proper shoes will definite make a HUGE improvement... and you'll be able to enjoy your walk! :flowerforyou:

I had a similar problem. We need to change shoes every 3-6 months depending on how many miles we're walking or running.
