The recomended daily intake of water is 8 glasses. The point is to track those 8 glasses, like you track your calories eaten and your calories burned when you exercise.

Why do you need to drink water?

Because it flushes toxins out of your body.
It relieves your body from hoarding / retaining water
There are studies that show that drinking water boosts your metabolism
    It helps clear your complexion
Water helps your kidneys function properly
    Water helps maintain muscle tone
    Water prevents dehydration
    It helps relieve constipation

I don't usually record my water intake, but, just like with calories, I think you are more likely to drink the recommended amount if you're actually tracking it and not just assuming that you're covered.

I do not buy into the theory that drinking lots of water is all that important for weight-loss itself unless you're eating a high-sodium diet (and you shouldn't be doing that anyway). But it definitely is necessary for overall health and provides other peripheral benefits as mentioned in the post above.

Everything that Ang said. The reason you should record it is to hold yourself accountable.
