I have been eating high protein and low carb lately. My diet has a lot of nuts and healthy oils added to it. Do I still need to be careful about my fat grams? Often, my fat grams are in the red, but then I think it's okay because I ate healthy fats. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?? You can add me as a friend and view my food diary if you need a better idea! Thanks!

I would say as long as they're good fats (i.e. not saturated) it should be fine. If you read through some of the FDA suggestions and general food/diet guidelines that RDs use, you'll see that even what we would consider "high" amounts of fat (say as high as 50-60% of your intake) has been found to be fine, from a health standpoint. And rule number one is really just calories in < calories out, and you'll lose weight. So, I would say if you're happy, you've got energy, you don't feel hungry all the time, and you're dropping pounds, why change a good thing?

    Good luck!

Check out Marks Daily Apple. The link is in my signature. It's called Primal Blueprint and it is about what you are doing. Yes you can eat more fat. The Primal Blueprint is low carb (no grains and he has tons of research and articles to explain why he takes out grains. No sugars, flours, starchy veggies except the occasional sweet potato. No legumes and he also explains why. They are called "antinutrients". It is moderate protein and high fat but with meat, fish, poultry, nuts, healthy oils, seeds (they praise coconut oil and coconut in general), fruits - lots of berries - and veggies. And his "Guide to Oils" was very enlightening. If you love to read and research then go through all of his articles. There's some amazing information and it made so much sense to me. Right now I'm set at 15/25/60. It's Paleo but not as strict. You can do 80% Primal and 20% whatever else you want - within moderation of course. You can do dairy or cut it out (he recommends only a couple of dairy items, though). And with all the protein and fats you stay full longer and don't have to eat as much. All those grain carbs just spike your blood sugar and then it crashes two hours later and you're hungry again.
I'm only in week two but I am really enjoying it. And no more carb/sugar cravings already!

Oh and it doesn't entail 6 days a week of intense exercising.

The Mayo Clinic's site for this is pretty helpful: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/fat/NU00262

I go over fat allotment a couple times a week because I eat a lot of avocado and sunflower seeds. I think I'm going to let that go, because honestly, I'm tracking so much right now that I cannot keep one more thing out of red. LOL If it's "better" fat instead of "not so better" fat, that's probably not going to hurt as much.
