Nothing but NET!

So I talked to a personal trainer at the gym today and showed him the app on my phone. I was asking about the calories remaining and he basically said I only needed to pay attention to the NET number on the far right of the goals bar. He said my net number is my deficit for the day and if I want to lose 1 1/2 lbs a week, my net should be 750 a day. Not -750, just 750.

If it is that simple, I will be really stoked bc it really simplifies things for me.

Does this sound right to you guys?

Yup your net shouldn't be in the negative.

Your net calories and your calorie deficit are two different things. Net calories are your calories consumed minus your calories burned.

Your calorie deficit can be 750 calories per day if you want to lose 1.5 pounds per week. Your net calories should never be as low as 750, net cals should be 1200 at least.

    I agree with NoAdd.

750 net calories a day is very low.
  • Ok so net calories should be at least 1200 or max 1490 (goal target for the day). with exercise, thats tough. i don't know if i can eat that much! Since I worked out today, that will put me at eating 2280 calories to meet the minimum 1200 net calories for today. Seems like a lot of food to be eating to lose weight but I am going to give it a go on this program for a month like they recommend. If i gain, i am going to be pissed! lol Thanks everyone, i really appreciate you taking the time to help out. I am sure I will get the hang of this eventually!

I thought the same thing about eating back my exercise calories at first. How in the world was I going to eat that much food in a day and still lose weight?:noway: I have been doing this now for a month and a half and I have lost weight consistently doing it this way! I am actually happy about it too cause I love to eat! I eat clean overall and have an occasional splurge day or meal!

Best to you in your journey!:drinker:

I think a big disconnect in our brains is that we still see what we eat as "there" even though technically we burned it off, so it isn't "there" anymore.

    Be careful.

How are you estimating that you burned over 1000 calories? We tend to overestimate our calorie burn and underestimate our intake. I bike an hour a day solid effort at a speed of 14-18 miles per hour . With a heart rate near my max predicted and I am less that 1000 cals burned.....

yes, that is the whole point! your NET is what you want your goal to be!! good luck!

    NET should be 1200 minimum.

I worry about that too which is why I am leary of eating all of my exercise calories. I am supposed to eat 1490 cals but feel good about keeping it at 1200 just in case the readings for exercise are off a little. I log EVERYTHING i eat and am trying to be very careful with logging exercise. I am using a Fitbit but I don't log those readings into this program unless I do a Turbofire class at home. I am getting my calories burned off of the machines I am using at the gym. On the elliptical, I do 60 mins at level 10 and vary my speed every 10 mins or so to keep my heart rate up and get my calories above 700 for the hour. Then I do the treadmill on the interval setting for 30 mins which changes the incline from 6% to 19% randomly every 30 seconds for 30 mins which burns about 300 to 350 cals.

Starting next week I will be doing my Turbofire classes in the mornings and the gym in the late afternoons. If you feel great and are enjoying yourself, lots of exercise is a good thing, right?

Sound like you are working pretty hard. I know that the machines in our gym are very different than my polar heart rate monitor estimates. 100's of calories different. I believe that many people use estimates that are too high and are actually inadvertantly over eating!
  • So I did a lot of reading up on accurate calorie burn tracking and it seems nothing is really going to be dead on all of the time especially I'd you are doing high intensity interval training so I am going to err on the side of caution and deduct 200 calories from every hour of calories burned my machines are telling me I did. That should account for machine inaccuracy and if I keep my net at 1200, i should be in a safe range clear of overeating and my body should begin to drop weight. Fingers crossed!!!
