Just Diagnosed...

Hi everyone,
This is my first post and although I could have made an intro thread, this is much more important to me.
I am a 22 year old female and I was recently diagnosed with a kinked ureter and a borderline functioning kidney. What this means is that I have an opportunity to increase the function and not have the kidney removed. Either way I will be experiencing surgery, so that is not an option.
Therefore, I am restricted in my diet due to this and am to really limit my intake of salts, unnatural sugars (like those in juices, granola bars, etc), red meats, proteins that are hard on the kidneys, dairy. I know that I am allowed to drink more than the standard amount of water (I'm currently intaking about 3-4L a day), fruits, veggies, fish, and whole wheats.
I am worried about not being able to take in enough calories (1200/day) and that my muscle mass will start to decrease. I currently weight 136 lbs and would like to lose a few more before my wedding, but in a healthy way. I practice hot yoga 2-3 times a week, as my doctor said it would have no effect on the kidney and that his advice was to drink more water.
Any ideas, recipes and advice that will help me increase the kidney function are welcome.
Thank you in advance,
Trina

I am glad I saw your post. I was diagnosed with reflux of the kidney ureters when I was very young. This only meant to me that I had frequent kidney infections and that my right kidney was primarily affected. I then also developed kidney stones. At one point, when I was 17 or so, they had suggested removing my right kidney. I said NO WAY! I began seeing a chiropractor, which is the reason I went on to study nursing and do undergrad for dc. Anyway, after daily adjustments for almost a year and special supplements, my ureteral reflux was nearly undetectable from the IVP! They dc put me on liquid hydrangea which is very beneficial for the kidneys. I would suggest seeing a homeopathic doctor before taking any supplements, especially given your renal diagnosis. The one thing that I can suggest is to drink your water hot or at least warm. This will not add undue stress to the kidneys as cold water does. You can "google" the benefits if you wish. I wish you the best of luck... oh, and I have never had a problem since then with my kidneys. Chiropractic might work?0

green smoothies (google it). My mother can only eat liquid food due to a muscular neurological disease. she adds protein to this and gets her fruit and veggies and protein in one swoop. the disease prevents her from eating enough to keep muscle. she has maintained on this. In addition to fruit smoothies. the green smoothies are good, fruit and veggies blended. You cannot taste the veggies at all. My husband and I eat them. you get TONS of nutrients. Plus, it's clean food. hope this helps.0

Thank you!! I tried my first green smoothie this morning and it was delicious. I'm still sticking to a mainly fruit and veggies diet as well as limited protein (fish mainly) and grains such as rice.
Any other suggestions?0 -
There is a book called " Prescription for nutritional healing". I think the author is Balchi? Might have the spelling wrong. Usually most good health food stores have the book and you can look up stuff. It's all alternative healing, ie supplement, herbs, etc and usually right on. They tell you what to add to your diet, as well as what to avoid that would aggravate your condition.
Good luck! You can do this!0 -
Thank you very much, I will certainly look for that book! I have seemed to find the pain triggers for it (mainly salts and sugars), but I am on day 4 of the veggie, fruit and fish diet and it seems to be working very well for me. I have my assessment tests on the 20th and 25th, so shortly after that I will be finding out how much 'meat' my kidney has and whether it can be saved. I hope all of my effort will pay off!
Thanks again!0
