I agree with the whole article!!! I am not afraid to sweat at the gym, I don't read on the treadmill (i actually watch tv that is suspended from the ceiling), and I eat after my workout... just something small, but still!?

Of course I agree. almost 30 pounds later it's working fine being a guy.

I try to get an hour of cardio and an hour of weights in each day and I'm not happy unless I can wring out at last half a pound of sweat from my cloths after I'm done. I don't do much flexing (still too depressing but I'm hopeful) and I don't tend to eat much for a while after I'm done. I do believe that if I can focus on reading something while I'm working out, I'm not giving it my all. Logging keeps me pushing to more reps and heavier weights.

I Don't know anything but I like to talk:

If you are in a calorie deficit, you can't bulk up muscles (this doesn't mean you can't tone). So don't be afraid to use them cardio and strength training should be tools in your arsenal by now.

Losing weight is not just losing fat, you are also losing muscle mass too. So you need some strength training IMHO.

But working those muscles and being and them being muscles they burn fat.

What do I think? Load of sexist rubbish. They're not secrets and it's not just "the boys" who work out like that. Any decent gym will be advising its members on these things, whatever their gender.

Who are these women who are scared to sweat, and who read magazines on the treadmill? Never seen any at my gym, thank goodness - and if they do exist they deserve the results they get!

I don't think I said that I was scared to sweat or even read a magazine on the treasmill. I go to a womens-only gym and after my workout, I leave completely drenched in sweat. I was just wondering if some people thought about the article. Thanks for the input though!

Err... No, you definitely didn't say anywhere that you were too scared to sweat or that you read magazines on the treadmill, you sound far too sensible for that. :)

I do think it's a shame if women are being "girly" in the gym, and expecting to get results, because they're going to be terribly disappointed.

I've never been to a women's only gym* have you seen people reading magazines on the treadmill at yours? Running and reading? Far too confusing, I'd be too scared that I'd fall off!

*at least I walked into one once and recoiled in horror because everything was PINK, the carpets, the walls, the doors, the ceiling, the light fittings, honestly it made my eyes bleed LOL!!!

Actually the owner of gym said that I was pushing myself too hard :noway: ! I ended up going to my doctor and getting a note stating that SWEAT = GOOD. Now they leave me alone! I have noticed that many women at my gym talk and gossip more than workout. It is like they are there to socialize more than anything. Then they all act astounded to hear about my prgress and ask me what I am doing...well DUH! Working out! I am not at the gym to make friends, I am there to change my life.

Luckily, my gym isn't all pink--GAG! --But they do have flowers all over and on the last day of the month, they hold a party (with cake, sugary juice, cookies, etc). It frustrates me and confuses me! I don't pay good money to belong to a gym to eat and socialize. If I wanted to do that, well then I would stay at home and continue to remain fat and out of shape!!!

I doubt most people flexing in the mirrors at the gym are doing it to break down muscle fibers more. But good article none the less. Anyone who is serious about their workouts will already be doing this.

That's so funny, and yes it's a life change for me too.

Sounds as if you're using the gym purely for the facilities, and not for their "advice" - which sounds as if it would probably be "Wear waterproof mascara for working out, just in case you accidentally exert yourself and sweat a little"

EDITED TO ADD: Whoops, they wouldn't sweat, they'd "glow gracefully" :P

Haha, how do you keep a straight face!
What an eye opener, I know it's a cliche, but I didn't really think there were really women like that. Don't get them in my gym, but while it's perfectly well equipped it's also pretty functional, so I guess it doesn't attract those types. Shame really, could do with a giggle!
