A friend of mine has been gettting "vitamin b" injections (there may be some epherdra-like product in there as well) and has lost 11 pounds this month. Has anyone ever heard of this/done it? What was your experience? Can I just TAKE a lot of vitamin B instead?

I give myself B12 injections once a month since my body doesnt seem to absorb it from food. the only difference I notice is I get a little more fatigued and my eyelids twitch if I dont take it on time. But taking supplements should do the same thing as injections, if you take enough, tho while getting proper nutrients will certainly help you get healthier, I would not expect miracles.

One good multi-vitamin a day is good enough. Vitamin B injections are recommended only if the body is not able to absorb it when taken orally. Remember excess of everything is bad.

is there a reason why your friend was taking Vitamin B injection?
Because it could as well be that the unbalance or lack of this Vitamin or the related condition was playing up with the person health and increasing their body weight.
Once the unbalance was corrected then the weight loss happened??

I have a couple of friends who when on the dr. bernstein's diet and were required to have vitamin b injections to help with their hunger cravings (supposedly).

the diet is a sham and they both suffered from it.
One lost her hair - which did not grow back. plus sensations in part of her hands. She lost a total of 110 pounds in about 8 months or so. And gained it all back adn then some within a year of stopping.

The other had similar results, she lost about 65 pounds in 3 months, but was so fatigued from the starvation aand the lack of nutrition that she couldn't get out of bed for days at a time. She gained all her weight back adn thensome as well in a very short time. Her doctors told her it would take over a year to recoup the damage she had done to her body.

But as other mfp people have commented there are other reasons when it might necessary for health reasons. that just wasn't the case for my friends - they were on a very dangerous diet that incorporated that to make it slightly easier for people to stay on it - and thus pay the corporation more money.

the average person wouldn't need vitamin b injections if they were eating healthy.

No ,she doesn't need them, she takes them as a weight loss suplement. It should be noted that she bleaches, spray-tans, waxes, injects, and gets fake nails so... she's not really going for the "natural beauty" thing there. Which is why I was seeking out second opinions.

There is nothing magic about the B complex vitamins. Most of the B complex can be absorbed with oral supplements. One exception is B12. Most people who are B12 deficient actually have a problem with something call intrinsic factor that is produced by stomach cells. Without it, you can't absorb the B12. That is why B12 is given by injection. (It can be absorbed under the tongue, but there is not clear guidance on how to dose it this way). Take a good multivitamin and don't waste money on vitamin injections.
