She noticed, right?

Before I started mfp, I had lost about 3 lbs then proceeded to lose another 2. We're all happy when we lose 5 lbs right? So the other day my aunt (my very opinionated aunt) said, "Wow, Lady Di, have you lost weight?" I proudly said, "Yes, I lost 5 lbs!" Then she laughs and says, "Oh, please, 5 lbs isn't noticeable..."

Ok, now I'm confused. She noticed I had lost weight, and then all of a sudden, just because of the NUMBER I lost it's magically no longer noticeable? Some people are SO FRUSTRATING!!! :explode:

I am proud of my accomplishments, no matter how small. I hate that family members can sometimes be the meanest critics when you try to do something good for yourself.

Family are the worst! Mine is the same way, backhanded compliments, shake it off, they give and then they take it away. My mom said to me on Easter..... "wow you look great" I was thrilled.....then she said "for someone pushing 40".

Or your could take it as a positive, meaning she thought you had lost alot more than five pounds seeing as it was a noticable loss on you.

GRRR! :explode: Opinionated, know-it-all, better than thou "friends" or family for that matter drive me up a wall. I have little advise to give because I deal with the same crap myself, but I can certainly sympathize with your frustration. Stay proud! 5lbs is awesome! Every pound counts and it all starts somewhere. I'd say ignore her, but it's easier said then done so my little advise would be to challenge your frustration. I tend to spend A LOT of time working out when I hear those kinds of comments. It's good for me, it lets out that unwanted energy, and I kind of feel like I'm "sticking it to them" when I'm so successful.

She obviosuly thought you looked great, and that you must've lost more. I'd leave it at that and be proud of your accomplishment!!

5 lbs on a girl, especially if the girl is pretty skinny is very noticeable.

I think that she meant that you had to have lost more than 5 pounds, because she noticed your weight loss. I don't think she meant it as a negative.

People are just so ignorant about health, fitness, and weight loss. Even on this very site where we're all ostensibly trying to become clueful and educated, there is so much misinformation flying around. Not surprising that your aunt is, well, clueless.

The first 5 lbs is an excellent milestone. Congratulations and keep up the great work!

Wow, that's incredibly stupid of her (no offense). She probably wasn't thinking about what she was saying. Congrats on the 5 lbs, I'm there too! :)
