Breakfast before my first 5K

Alright folks, I'm kind of freaking out... my first race is tomorrow morning at 8am. I normally don't eat before any of my runs because I head out on them within 20 minutes of waking up. However, for tomorrow, I have to get up at about 5:30am to get ready and get to the race on time. Do you think I'll do okay if I don't eat before the race? I've always heard that you should never change anything on race day, so part of me says not to, but I'm not sure.

If I do eat, I'm thinking a small protein shake (1/2 scoop whey, 1/2 cup milk, 1/2 banana) or a hard boiled egg and a piece of fruit. Help please!!

I think something small would do. But that's just me, I can't run on an empty stomach without getting severe pain

I actually posted about this a few days ago: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/237753-runners-pre-run-eating

I wouldn't recommend too much more than a banana. I ran my last 5k on an empty belly and felt great! (Okay, okay, except for the hamstring I pulled midrace, but my tummy was fine, lol)

If your body isn't used to food before a good run, then don't change that.

I agree with not trying anything new but if you think I would chose a 1/2 banana over the protein. no egg, at least Iknow my stomache could not take an egg. if you do eat I would do it an hour before the race or right after you get up. it should be settled my 8a. good luck and have fun!

Runners nutrition, gels, drinks, right before the run.

Either option you have is fine, if you do eat it's plenty early enough. But for a 5K if you didn't eat, you should be fine too.

Stick to water and a banana or other fruit. I myself can not run after eating a full meal.
