Does anyone have issues with lower back pain after exercising? I have been on the elliptical every day this past week and a little on the abdominal machine. My lower back is killing me. Suggestions?

I'm on the treadmill every night, and my lower back hurts every time. I'm going to get new shoes tomorrow to try and combat the pain. I think my shoes are old and not appropriate for me.

I think it is possible that we might need to strengthen some of those lower back muscles too - but I don't know what to do in order to strengthen them. I'm hoping to save up enough to hire a personal trainer for a few sessions here in the next week...

    ditto above (alienblonde)
+1: Add an ab belt & pull it low for support of your low back

edited to add: Please be very careful with your low back. I ignored some signals & ended up with a messed up disc & a pinched nerve!

You need to do core work to strengthen the stabalizing muscles.

You can google core exercise. Planks are good, modified situps etc.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I really don't want to end up with a back problem and I do believe that dragging around all of this extra weight really contributes to the back pain.

I have a herniated disc in my lower back that is also very close to my siatic nerve so when it gets inflamed i not only have back pain but my siatic nerve kills sometimes to. if you live in a country that sells over the counter muscle relaxant like Robaxacet ( its a pain killer and muscle relaxant all in one! great tool to have) try it. But ya ibuprofen is definately helpful along with all these other things. try and find exercises specifically designed for people with lower back pain. i know there is alot of exercized i cant do, but you can look some up online, talk to a trainer, or even maybe talk to some of your friends. With how many people there are these days with lower back pain im sure someone will know of some great stretches and exercizes that you can do without ending in pain =)

The best way to make the back muscle strong is to develop and strength the core (abs). Pilates is a great way to accomplish that, also all the abdominal exercises (plank, reverse cruch etc.).

However, if the pain continues you may need to check it out and ask your doctor for an MRI to make sure that you don't have lower back problems such a bulging discs or compression of the spine..

The pounding of walking in the treadmill a high speed and/or incline, jogging and/or running would make the pain worse. I am talking from experience because I am going through that right now.

For some people the elliptical is better (not for me because I find it very boring), or try the stationary bicycle. You can also go to the chiropractor for an adjustment, and that will help if the reason for the pain is just overexertion. Again, strength the core to help the back.

Good luck and feel better soon.
