What am I doing wrong?

Okay. At work yesterday, this woman walks in that is a regular and you could see how much weight she had lost. I mean, this time last year, she was way bigger than I am now. She told me that she went for a size 26 to a 10 in less that a year. I asked her what she did and she says that she just lifts weights three times a week, no cardio. I've been hitting the gym 5 times a week, doing about 30 minutes of cardio on average, and strength training, plus have completely overhauled my diet. And I have yet to lose any real significant amount of weight. I know it's all about sticking to it and every body type is different, but seriously, she has lost a whole person. That is frustrating. What am I doing wrong? I would seriously love for my ladybug to have another number on it besides 0, lol.:ohwell:

You probably have to open up your diary so everyone can help...if your not tracking your calories then that would be the downfall...0

We all now it is not easy to lose. Perhaps she has busted her tail working out and changing her diet, but wants to downplay it like it was easy.
Everyone is different. Also our biology varies greatly from person to person. Keep doing what you are doing. Good luck!0 -
it is also possible that she wasn't quite honest with you, she may have had that lap band op or anything, some people don't like to share their secret. Just stay with the program you will get there. My weight loss is slow, but I'm hoping that at the same time I am learning new habits that i will stick to forever. Long term is what you want.0

Maybe she had one of the weight loss operations and just didnt tell you.. That seems to be too much of a loss without having that done. I am going in to have the bypass operation to help me loose 150lbs .0

I'm inclined to agree with the others here. I don't think it's you, I thin she's being disingenuous. Which is a fancy way of saying she's totally BSing. Some people are embarrassed to admit they had the Lap or GS but gee, she needs a better story at least,lol.0

I agree with the others. I don't think she was completely honest.
That being said though, I think if you want some help from us you should open your diary. It says you have been here since Dec and you should have something besides a 0 on your ladybug.
Best wishes.0 -
You know, she might not be telling the whole story. Shoot for health with good nutrition and good body movement and good attitude. I went on a low glycemic, nutrition packed food plan. I increased my body movement. I am sure I ate a lot of calories, but I lost 23 pounds all together, and even when I went off the diet, I did not gain it back. I felt good too. The point is, the weight loss was a side effect of my pursuit of lower blood glucose readings! My goal did not involve my weight but involved trying to get my blood glucose numbers down and I was successful, and was so happy and surprised that I was losing weight to boot. I need to get back doing that as well as I was then.0

I agree with what others have said - she may have had some kind of weight loss surgery. Some people just don't like to talk about it. Don't let her derail you! Stick with your plan. Losing slowing is still losing!0

that's because gaining muscle goes a LONG way, people keep touting cardio as such a great way to lose fat but strength training is better in the long run. you can keep on doing your cardio but you should really try lifting more heavy weights.0

I don't think she did anything to derail anyone. She said what she was and said what she is. If she had surgery and doesn't want to discuss it and you want to assume she did, then okay. If you really want to know and she comes in all the time, "Ask Her". Otherwise, go to a nutritionist, hit a gym, read a book, and go after your goals.
The one thing I can say for sure is that gaining lean muscle will help you toward your goal of losing weight, by keeping the metabolism going even after your workouts. Faster Metabolism means more calories burnt.0 -
I wonder if you have overhauled your diet enough? It seems to me that weight loss is 90% diet. How your body looks after the weight is gone is mostly exercise.
I have been watching other women in my office. I know they don't do as much cardio as I do and I'm certain no weight is touched, much less lifted - yet they're blowing me out of the water with weight loss. I,m going back to the drawing board on food. I've been allowing myself some very low calorie things without logging them and I haven't been logging on the weekends and I think that may be the problem for me.0 -
everyone in here that said this woman is lying is being ridiculous. who actually lifts weights on a barbell training program? it COMPLETELY changes your body. combine that with a legitimate, clean diet and you can easily lose that much weight if you have it to lose. its ~10 pounds a month, little over 2 pounds a week. people do that on this damn site without doing any exercise!
i find it kind of shameful that the same people who preach tolerance, acceptance, and moderation are judging someone who actually put the work in because they don't believe it. oh my god get over your weak selves and congratulate someone who did what you clearly have not!0 -
How dare some of you by suggesting this woman is BSing or had surgery. I TRANSFORMED my body with heavy weight lifting 5 days a week and a clean diet... over 50lbs gone from 30% body fat to 18 % body fat in 6 months.
IT CAN BE DONE NATURALLY!0 -

Thats what I was thinking! People can do it without surgery. SMDH its quite a few people on the board that have lost quite a bit of weight w/o surgery. I've lost close to 50 pounds since January AND this is with me not having a ultra clean diet but I eat healthy (with slip up's) and much healthier than I did before. She went from size 26 to 10 but you didn't mention exactly how much weight she lost and depending upon her height she might not have lost as much as you think to get there. You also didn't mention her telling you what she was eating. She could be eating clean or eating 2 calories a day to lose that much.
If you've been working out consistently doing exercises that will challenge you, then I would check my diet. This is my 2nd time around on this weight loss journey (I lost 67 pounds the first time) and one thing is for sure "you can't out exercise a bad diet". I know you said you do cardio 5x a week BUT are you walking for 30 mins at 3.0 mph or are you getting your heart rate up?? and what type of strength training program are you doing? There could be a lot of factors on your weight loss, everyone's body is different. I hate to sound cliche but this is a marathon NOT a race. 80% diet, 15% exercise, and 5% patience.0 -
I'm 5'8" and she's shorter than me. I would give her about 5'6". She said that she hadn't changed her diet, just did weight lifting. I generally do about 30 minutes on the Elliptical. If its a day I have to be at work later in the day, I may do 60. I know that the weight isn't going to come off fast. Heck, I didn't gain it all in a month either. I don't live with her, so I don't know whether or not she has had any type of bariatric surgery. I was just expressing some of my frustration and didn't mean to start a war about what she has or hasn't done. I do know that I need to find what works best for me and that will involve trial and error.0

HI!if you open your diary, maybe people could look and give you some tips.
What works for 1 doesn`t always work for someone else.

If she was lifting heavy, it's possible... but she was probably eating pretty well to begin with? Maybe just cut her portions. I don't know, all I have to say is don't compare yourself to everyone else. I've done that and it's REALLY freakin' discouraging. Compare yourself to yourself. Strive to be the best you... if there was a time when you felt really good about yourself, think about what you were doing back then, and do it! That's what I've been doing. I thought back on 2009 when I was in the gym everyday and eating very little and I've revised that. I eat a lot more so as to keep my body fueled and I'm doing similar workouts that I was then but with heavier weights and I'm feeling great!
Jillian Michaels says you should lift heavy enough that you can't do more than 10 or 12 reps. Maybe even lift more so that you can only do about 10. My personal trainer has me doing hammer curls with 12.5s and I can make it to 10 on the first set but the 2nd and 3rd sets I am barely making it to 8. It makes me sore and I'm already seeing new strength in my arms. Push yourself, baby!! Lifting heavy is the way to go, seriously. Best way to lose fat.0
