Shopping! Dread or enjoy?

I have a work function coming up that I needed to get something 'nice' for. My other half and I took several hours yesterday looking around a plethora of stores to try to find *something* - anything. I absolutely dread shopping. I've lost a total of 55 lbs, so you would think I would be excited right? And some parts of it were.....until I looked in the mirror.
I was in a store that had some really cute dresses. I tried several on, finding out that lo and behold! I could fit in a size 14! This should have been a moment of triumph for me. I started out as a size 20 (*cough cough, squeezing into a size 20, should probably have been a 22*). To be able to go into a 'normal' size store and fit into someting should have been a dream! and then I looked in the mirror. Fat arms. Fat, chubby legs. Rear the size of a landmark. I felt horrible.
How many of us have these roller coaster emotions over clothes?

I DREAD IT
clothes shopping depresses the hell out of me, which is why Im trying to lose as much weight as possible before my best friends wedding... not for the actual wedding... but for the shopping for a dress!!!
but well done on losing so many dress sizes!! thats amazing!!0 -
I like it now, because my mindset has changed. If the garment didn't fit me before, I would take that as a sign that there was something wrong with me. Now I view it as there is something wrong with the garment! Also, if something doesn't fit now, I describe it to myself this way, "this doesn't fit YET" That has helped me tremendously!!!
I started at the same place you said, squeezing into 20's. Now I can wear a 10! Keep at it, you are doing GREAT!!!0 -
I deat it as well... It seems like I'll be having a "skinny day" where I feel good about myself. Then I'll try clothes on and feel like a cow! I too was in a size 20, went to a size 10 dress and I still felt like I was a 20. Now I'm back to a 12 dress and I feel even worse. BUT, that's why we're here
I bet you looked amazing in the dress, your head might just need to catch up to the new you0 -
being an absolute girl i love it! especially trying to fit in a size smaller than before!0

Thank you! All I can say is that I don't think I'm ready for a dress. No way. lol I did however buy a super cute blazer from Le Chateau.
I'm trying to see this experience from a stance of motivation. I am now motivated to tone the living heck out of my body. Although, I was so down on myself from the experience that I went a little crazy with the Thai food last night. The odd thing was, I weighed myself this morning again to see what impact it had from a sodium stand point and I was actually down a pound. ???? I'll take it!! lol0 -
I think that we all work so hard for every pound and inch that we have lost. This makes us want to look fabulous in everything we try on. I have been shopping with mixed results. In some cases I am so happy with the sizes I can try on, but then when I still look only OK in a particular size I decide not to buy anything until I am much smaller. I feel like I should be farther along with all the hard work I have done!0

Hahah hands down...i am NOT a shopper!
For anything. If i go clothes shopping for me....i can handle about 2 hours..but if i go with someone else(hahah my sister)..the top most...an hour!0 -
Hate shopping for myself! I see all those cute tops I'd like to have but when I try them on it's looks like a linebacker wearing his little sister's clothes. I'm very wide shouldered and larger on top. I love when my hubby goes shopping for me because he know exactly what to buy. He bought me 2 outfits for Mother's Day that I would have never picked for myself because I would have thought they weren't going to look cute on me (I'm wearing one in my profile pic). He sure has the knack...and I'm glad for that, or I'd never have any new clothes!0

GIRL! You need to be excited over the fact that you are now a size 14! That is a major victory!!! Instead of looking in the mirror and seeing defeat you need to see all the success you've accomplished, and you should feel good about. I understand its tough-but focus on the positives! You have done an amazing job to get down those sizes, so when you look in the mirror see the hard work paying off and the accomplishments that will come down the road!
I used to hate shopping because I would always go a size up. I remember bawling in a dressing room one time because I went from a single digit to a double digit (and I had never been one before) and it was depressing. But going shopping and realizing you can go a size down (or MANY, in your case!) should cheer you up not bring you down!
Try to feel good about yourself. You've come this far so you know you can get to exactly where you want to be.0 -
I HATE shopping, any and all shopping and always have even as a skinny teen. Back then I'd make my own clothes to avoid shopping but now I have internet shopping...WOOOOO happy girl! I can't see it changing when I've lost the weight...just hate the hustle bustle and rude manners of others.
As for your shopping trip I think sometimes your brain needs time to catch up with changes, give it time for your brain and your body to adjust to the losses and you may feel and look quite different. Well done on your 55lbs gone.0 -
Strange mixture of both! I had the exact same experience as you recently. I've lost about 45 lbs, and I decided to wander into the little jrs boutique store next to my Vons, and see if I could fit into any of their clothes! Well, amazingly, I could, but I just felt so fat a poofy next to all the little perfect california blonds that were shopping for their clubbing clothes... Even the size larges made my stomach fat bubble over to button the pants... Booo I was sitting their thinking, damn, 45 lbs down, and I can't even fit into a size large??? Totally killed my confidence for the day.
I'm leaving on a trip for 4 months coming up soon, and I need to buy new clothes. I'm leaving the clothes shopping for the last possible second, and hoping to be able to fit into as small a size as possible. Mainly for the ego boost, but also because I don't want to buy a whole bunch of new clothes, and have them not fit in 2 mos.
On the other hand, I tried on a size D bra at the store, and it came so close to fitting - that I think I might finally actually be a DD - that means I can shop at real bra stores for cute bras for the first time in years! Hello Victoria's Secret, here I come!0 -
I've always hated shopping even when I was 50lbs lighter. I don't like spending the time in the stores and most of the clothing out there I hate. I'm a tshirt and jeans kinda girl... so if I have to go dress shopping something is definately wrong. lol
I do agree though that we've all fought for this and we should be happier about fitting into a smaller size.0 -
I like shopping but not at a mall. Malls suck the life out of me.0

It depends on my mood. Some days I will be like "Yeah, I am in a size 4! WOO!" Others I will be "Man, I really need some smaller clothes, but I am so FAT". I think you just need to go shopping on the days you know you rock the world0

Kryscas, You should be so proud of yourself and what you've accomplished. I used to think it was lame to feel proud of other people and their success but I know how much of a struggle it is for us. 44 pounds in the shot time you've been at this is simply amazing and shows your dedication to getting healthy. I hate some mirrors and love others. Like the Seinfeld episode with the "skinny mirrors" LOL. I look better in some than others. I have an old full length mirror on my closet door which I use as my standard gauge of my visual progress. Also, I have a KILLER double breasted suit that is way too small for me (fat guys look horrible in double breasted suits). It cost $800.00 and that is a good motivator for me. I want to fit into that by a fall wedding I'm attending. Ultimately though, my motivation is my health. I want to live as long as possible as well as healthy as possible no matter what I'm wearing. Again great job, keep up the good work!!!!!0
