middle of the night eating

for the past week or so, i have been waking up a couple hours after i fall asleep and eating a protein bar. i am awake and aware of getting out of bed and going to kitchen, but clearly not enough to think through craving or whatever is going on. i have never been one to wake up and eat in the middle of the night so it's kind of freaking me out. i don't want to develop the habit of doing so.. and why a protein bar?!? i am eating enough throughout the day and actually recently tweaked the 1200 suggestion up to 1400. this "midnight snack" seems to happen on days when i eat my exercise calories and on the days that i don't. anyone have any experience with this or just a thought on what may be going on? it sucks not feeling like i have control over it because i am half asleep and unable to ignore the craving. argh!
