Separated Abdominals--A Few Questions?

I had my last child 19 months ago, but just started working out to lose weight in January. I JUST read several articles talking about separated abdominals after pregnancy and some of the damage that can be caused if you do the wrong kinds of ab exercises if you have them. Supposedly if they are separated more than two fingertips width then if you do crunches, etc it can train your abs outward. My husband says not to believe everything--I "tested" and mine are 1 fingertip, but they don't seem to be "flattening" much and I'm concerned that when I started I had a bigger problem and that I've caused some damage. I am somewhat new to this fitness stuff so I was hoping someone who is more educated and experienced will know first of all whether this is factual information? And if so, could I have unknowingly done irreversible damage? I hate to sound like I don't know what I'm talking about--and I don't, I'm just hoping someone on here does and can help me. I appreciate any advice I can get. Thanks!
