Why does MF suggest more carbs than protein?? If our goal is to lose weight shouldn't we be eating more protein than carbs? I'm confused...anyone care to clarify?? Thank you much :D

the MFP suggestions of percentages is based on the US food pyramid. Carbs from whole grains and fruits and veggies are ideal. You can also change your percentages if you want. I have my protein set a bit higher as well as fat with carbs as the lowest. Its just my preference.

I think that you need to find what works best for you. The settings MFP gives are generic and you can (and should probably) adjust them to suit your needs.

Also, remember that carbs are not the enemy - we must just be sure to stay away from white (highly refined) carbs as much as possible. Things like brown rice and multigrain whole wheat bread have their place :-)

    All the best

First, someone else is typing a better answer right now, but you still need carbs for energy, and the amount MFP suggests is a healthy amount.
Also, you can modify them. I upped my protein by 5 percent and took it out of carbs. I could probably do it again(and perhaps I will) but I have had wild success with this diet here- so i probably will just stick with it

Because it suggests a balanced diet. Low-carb is not the only way to lose weight and, in fact, a lot of us don't think it's a sustainable way to maintain weight. MFP does allow us to go an customize our goals so you can set the ratio different if you do choose the low-carb route.

I tried raising it, but there was no way I could get that much protein in in a day, so it seemed pointless and setting me up to fail. I switched back to suggested settings.

Just curious...how did you determine that ratio for yourself?

I don't know of any "diet" or eating plan that suggests more protein than carbs. You can change those attributes manually in the set goal area.

I'm not necessarily looking for a high protein diet...I was just thinking that it would make more sense I guess to eat less carbs and more protein.

Thank you all for your response :D

I did a lot of research and that seems to be a good ratio for people who are trying to lose weight and exercsing at the same time. You keep everything in balance while getting enough carbs for energy and protein for building muscle. I have used it while losing weight for the last 5 months and it has worked very well for me.

That sounds really good...it makes sense thank you! I wouldn't have know what to change the settings to even if I wanted to :P

Well, you do want to raise your protein and do a little less carbs than you are probably. I'm striving for a 40/30/30 but I end up being more of a 35/30/35.
