I bought two big things of buttercup squash Sunday...and I just went to bake them up...and the...I don't know what it's called...but the thing up top like on a pumpkin where you can pick it up from and stuff? thats not actually part of the veggie? That has started to mold. But there is no mold on the squash...is it still okay to eat? It's my favorite veggie and it's hard to find here in NY cept this time of year. :brokenheart:

I'd eat it. If it tastes weird, then stop. But otherwise it's probably fine.0

It should be just fine...if the squash has soft spots just cut them out. Kind of like a bruise on an apple, the rest is just fine. But as Walnut said...if it doesn't taste right....don't eat it feed it to Max...he'll eat anything!!! ( with bacon.....)

Yeah, I agree. Or wrap it in bacon. I'll eat anything wrapped in bacon.

That thing at the top is the stem! I'm growing some of these this year in my little garden. I didn't realize that they turn into giant plants that take over everything, but nonetheless I'm excited to eat them. I've got a couple I can pick now, but for the most part squash is a fall crop. They should be available through November. Next time feel around for soft spots before you purchase, and only choose the fruits that are firm. A moldy stem is nothing to worry about though. Squash stay fresh for weeks after they have been picked. It must have just gotten moist in transport some how. No worries.
I think I will have bacon wrapped squash for dinner tonight. Sounds yummy.0 -

I want to have a garden someday. I live in an apartment right now though so I can't. :ohwell: I'd love to grow lots of squash and cucumbers and tomatos! And lots of greens for the animals  (I'm not big on salad, but my bunnies and guinea pig love romaine, parsley and basil. LOL)0 -
