Frustrated.. Where do I go!

Kinda frustrated we canceled our gym because when we moved there was a fitness center in the neighborhood, well a week or so after we moved in a hail storm damaged it and its been closed every since, suppose to open this week, but its still boarded up. I have a 5k to train for in July 2nd and I need a treadmill. There is a fitness place up the street that Deb joined but its a year contract and $35/mo.

I went running outside last night and at 1.5 miles (a lot of it uphill) I was about to die.

I did my 5k last Nov and never slowed down (of course I was working out 3+ days a week)... I have gained about 15-20lbs back from my loss since I stopped workout out and a very stressfull and busy time finishing construction on our house.

Our neighborhood has lots of hike and bike trails, but I find it easier to run on a treadmill just to build stamina so I cant slow down. I have a far way to go and now I am not sure how to get there...

have you tried looking on Craigslist for a treadmill? I always seen tons of sports equipment on there that people are looking to get rid of and you can probably find a treadmill incredibly cheap, definitely cheaper than joining a gym for more than a month or two. This way you can train in a way you feel comfortable.

I've been 5K training as well, and I do a combination of outdoor running (hills help you build stamina!) and running at the gym on the treadmill. Honestly, I prefer running outside. I can go longer and faster, which is a bit odd, but just staring at the wall while running at the gym tends to mess with my brain.

Anyways, perhaps you can find a route that isn't so hilly, or if there are sections of a trail that are relatively flat, just run back and forth a few times instead of following the trail all the way.

According to Google, there is a "Anytime Fitness" and a "All About Fitness" near you. If one of them is damaged, and the other one is the $35 a month, that leaves one more... but it's called "Get Motivated Boot Camp" and it doesn't sound like it will have a treadmill. There is a "4 Minute Fitness" in Denton, I dunno if it is 'near' but the map says it is. I know that driving a long way is not what I want to do to work out, and I understand if anyone else feels the same way.

If $35 is too high for you, continue running outside. You could find a flat spot of ground and just run back and forth. I see there is something called Savannah Park, with a lake? You could run around that

LOL! I love your quote on the bottom: The only thing limiting me is my mind.. Since I have lost my Mind, nothing will stop me now!

When running, I also find it much easier to run on a treadmill. Even pace and an even incline. Much, much easier.

Can you just go for a walk, or do you get bored with that? For me, it is the easiest since I don't have ready access to a gym. I have found many different ways to go for a walk around my neighborhood. Not quite the burn as running, but I find it does work. I know you are training for a 5K, so walking might not be an option in that regards.

Annual contracts and $35.00 a month is tough now a days. This is why I am not a member of one. Do you have a senior center nearby or an assisted living facility? I have one up the street that allows the public to come in and use their small exercise facility and pool for a dollar a day. I don't use it because the hours are very limited. Maybe that would be worth a try? I hope you find a resolution soon. Good luck!

When I first moved my community was just starting to build their gym. I found that my town's park district had a gym and allowed a free pass for the first week and a monthly membership of $20 without having to sign any contracts. I did that for 2 months until my gym opened up then started using the clubhouse gym for free. You should check around town to see if any places offer deals that are non commital so you can work out and go back to working out for free when it becomes available!

The Anytime fitness is the place my wife joined its $35/mo but I dont need it for a year because eventaully the fitness center will reopen back up. Its not I cant afford $35, but I dont want to be tied to a year contract.
I am just getting back into running and knowing where I was its just bummed to hardly be able to run a mile or two without dieing and then when I updated my ticker for real and see it go back below 50lbs lost I was bummed.
I am back to eating good and running when I can, I just gotta stick to it, but I hope the fitnee center opens soon.

I enjoy walks with my family, we have been doing them to try to be active now we are settled in, but with my 5k I guess honestly, I ran 32:33 last time and I see myself now and if I run like 45min or something its going to suck that I cant get back to where I was. I want to stick in at least 35min range.

    So?
I've seen you over the last year plus and you have done a wonderful job in your weight loss. I also gained some back after losing quite a bit. So, that's life sometimes, and we have to figure out why it happened..

I've gone on to couch25k from last year. I don't own a treadmill and I go outside. I walked last year, and progressed to about week 3. This year I restarted, and I just finished week 5. Accomplished the dreaded 5 min, 8 min, and finally a 20 min non stop.
Every time I go out, I do 8k, jog and walk. my 4km times including walk are now 30 mins.
Is your 5k race that you want to do done on a treadmill, or outside?

My point. You hit walls before, that you thought "I'm going to die".. Everything is not easy. We know that. You can do it. Push through it!.

Also, possibly pick some other routes... I have 3-4 routes I jog/walk so I don't get bored doing the same one over and over again.

That was a realization that I also had. Even if I'm nice and comfy running on the treadmill, my 5Ks were all going to be outside, sometimes in the rain (like this past Saturday), in less than pristine conditions and you have to propel yourself along. So, honestly even if it's a setback to run outside, you're better off. I love mapmyrun, it's definitely helped me branch out. I used to just run laps around a small lake (1K = 1 lap) but last week I picked a route through my neighborhood, and it was hilly! I was really happy I did tho, because sure enough my 5K ran some of the very same route that I ran myself and I was less scared of running the hills (in the soggy drizzle now less).

So, yes, a kick in the pants is a good thing :) You'll be a better 5K-er for it.

Check out the local school or community center.. School have tracks with no hills until you get your groove back, if not community centers usually have passes for a few buck and no contracts.

I have to drive to the Town Lake to walk, b/c our neighborhood is too hilly for for my shin to handle just, too much stress on the fractures. :(

Chin up you will be back in the habit and running 5K with no problem, just keep plugging at it a little bit more each day and it will get easier.

My anytime fitness has a three month and six month option. Maybe yours does too.
