So I have Spina bifida, and the way i walk causes me to walk mostly using the muscles in my things (mostly the area on top of my thigh) and because of those 19 years of doing so, theyre pretty muscular and in my opinion, too big. can i tone them down a little bit by using the elliptical or treadmill? (im trying to loose 7 pounds too so i need a cardio that will help t loose the weight, but not make them bigger).

can anybody help??

    Hi,

Unfortunately you cannot force your body to loose size from a particular muscle group. Spot fat removal is not possible, you simply workout, eat at a calories deficit and your body will decide where to loose the fat from.

Doing extreme sessions of cardio, we're talking about several hours a day, will lead to over-training and loss of muscle mass from the body parts that are over-trained as your muscles do not have time to repair. But I shouldnt have to tell you how dangerous this is!

Hmm, this sounds tricky. I don't think there are going to be any exercises that will specifically make those muscles smaller, you can't stop using them everyday to walk!

It might be worth getting in touch with a physiotherapist to see if they can recommend any exercises that will help strengthen up the other muscles in your legs to balance them out, if you know what I mean. Because of your spina bifida this might not be an easy option, but I think you need to see someone with a good understanding of muscles who can look at your specific situation and biodynamics.

Good luck, and remember that any extra exercise that you can do is going to help build strength and endurance and more exercise and more muscles will help with your weight loss.
