personal trainers: what the heck

I don't understand what is with these people. They are so aggressive. I was at the gym the other day just waiting for a class to start and kind of putzing around on some weight machines and two ambushed me demanding to know my "Fitness goals". To me that's just kind of absurd. I want to lose weight, but for me this is more about fighting depression and trying to feel good and I can't do that with people in my face.

I know some people are different and like to be pushed and I know trainers know a lot about what they do, a heck of a lot more than I do, but I'm not really as dedicated to "training" as I am to feeling better about myself. I can't feel better about myself when I have some dude the size of a truck invading my space and scolding me to do one more. Don't they tell these people there are different types of people at the gym and some feel threatened by you coming over and bossing them around? It's people like that who have always made me avoid gyms.

I don't agree with being pounced on @ a gym that is absurd and annoying!! But if you pay for it (like I have) I do expect to be pushed!! Sorry about your encounter because it can certainly be uncomfortable when you don't want that attention!!!

Being a PT in a gym chain is usually poorly paid (in terms of the basic pay), so their are approaching people on spec to basically tout for business (1-2-1- sessions).

And some are very sensitive and helpful... and some don't have the social skills and come across as pushy.

If someone keeps bothering you and you told them you're not interested in sessions, just inform the manager.

Well then, as a know it all, I prescribe 1 hour walks daily in the sunshine, with 2-3 weight lifting sessions a weak wearing a shirt with either the Grinch making mean face, or Oscar the Grouch saying something inappropriate.

they work on commission. They will be as agressive as used car salesmen, if you let them. If you are firm and direct though, such as "I'm not interested in personal training, and I would like to work out uninterrupted, thank you." They will stop.
