Several friends at work are either trying to loose weight and or/get healthier. Some are exercising every day after school, while others are watching what they eat. A couple of them, that I eat lunch with several times a week, are not being healthy about it. They are doing Slim fast and they're clearly hungry...because that is a horrible diet. You're basically starving yourself! They even "messed up" on their diet (???) this past weekend. Again, because they haven't been eating enough. One said yesterday that they were going to do SouthBeach, which I do not think is a healthy way to diet, since you're depriving yourself of a whole food group. From what I've read a lot of people are successful with SouthBeach but eventually stop loosing and sometimes will put the weight back on.

I've tried several times to share what I've learned since I started in January but they don't listen. Which isn't a new thing...I try to speak up and say something or contribute to the conversation, and I'm either ignored or talked over. They know I've lost 15 pounds, that I exercise 6 days a week, and eat healthy. I guess unless you're ready, you're not going to listen. I just wish they would I really think I could help!

They probably think you're rude for sharing your opinion when they didn't ask.

Just let them screw up until they recognize how successful and awesome you're being and they'll be willing to listen.

Yeah, some people just think they KNOW the right way and really won't listen.

Example: My boyfriend texted me this morning, wanting me to come over and help motivate him on the treadmill. So I go over there, walk into his apartment.... he is eating DEEP FRIED tater tots. I was like Chris, really?!?! He's like "well we're going to work them off anyway!".

Yay, he's in the gym some, good for him, but he won't listen either that he's gotta change some more if he really wants to lose weight!

Its very good that you offer your opinion :] hope they listen eventually!

Altho I must say that there is nothing wrong with South Beach and can be a very great way to lose weight and lifestyle since grains are not needed in the diet. And south Beach does allow small amounts of fruit and whole grain after the first two weeks

Sometimes you just gotta let people do what they do.

Word. Props for being healthy and trying to advocate such practices. I live in Los Angeles and I always hear of the 'new diet' of cookies, grapefruit, acai berry, lipo, eat anything except this huge long list diet... So sick of short cuts..

You can only help those who truly want your help. Just keep contributing and eventually if they truly want help they will remember what you've said and turn to you. If not, move on and help someone else. Don't waste your time with those who don't truly want it.

Some people just don't like to accept the fact that weight didn't come on over night so it isn't going to come off over night either. Weight loss to a lot of people is a chore and not a lifestyle change. Until they come to realize that this is for themselves to be a healthier happier person they will continue to look for those quick fixes.

Congrats to you for taking the step and for being there for your friends. All you can do is look after yourself and hopefully seeing you succeed will be their inspiration and they will switch the thought pattern. Some will and some won't and keep on joining the conversation. They are probably hearing you loud and clearly, but change is soo scary at times.

Once again congrats on starting this journey, you deserve it and remember we are all here for you=)

Same thing has happened to me. When people ask what I've been doing to lose weight, I tell them about this site, eating healthy, drinking tons of water, etc. It's up to the individual to actually DO the program - until they're ready, nothing will change. The quick weight loss "gimmicks" work for a short while, then the dieters end up gaining all the weight back when they start eating "normal" food. Be patient...eventually they'll see what really works when you keep losing & getting healthy!

Well said. I really like your ticker photo. How did you get it?

Yeah a lot of times people need to learn from their mistakes. A lot of younger people do something they don't realize is wrong or bad and eventually they will seek help when it doesn't turn out the way they expected. C'est la vie

You may be confusing the South Beach Diet with out and out low carb diets like Atkins. Except for the two week introductory/cleansing period, South Beach does not actually eliminate grains, just limits them and focuses on whole grains, rather than processed grains.

Furthermore, the South Beach Diet has been subjected to the kind of testing that few diets have and has been shown to improve blood chemistry, as well as promote weight loss, for many users. The marketing history of South Beach is different from most fad diets, as well: This was developed then started receiving publicity because it was getting results, so he eventually published. Most diets are published as a way of generating publicity. In total, South Beach, and similar diets such as Mediterranean and Sonoma, are amongst some of the soundest nutritional plans available.

Unsolicited advice is rarely well received, but if you brought up about eliminating entire food groups, then they are even less likely to listen to you if they know that this is not true. Any time that we get our facts messed up while criticizing others, they are more likely to focus on our failings and skip over whatever may actually be sound advice.

*Sigh* This is the story of my career. People hear when they are ready. I also don't believe in eliminating food groups or macronutrients, but people will do what they will. Be open to the people who are open to you. As they see your continued success, they may come to you for questions or advice. Your body will be a walking advertisement for your lifestyle. Until then, be supportive and loving. You'll catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.
