Counting calories

Does a person really have to count calories for the rest of her life to lose weight or to maintain her weight? It feels so unnatural, but it's the only thing that seems to guaruntee results for me.

For the rest of your life? No. That's no way to live...
BUT...
Start off by counting calories until you can mentally grasp the idea of proper portion sizes and food amounts for you, so that you can use those correct amounts in your future meal preparations.... now that's a better way to live :-)0 -
Counting calories is a bit like having training wheels on your bike.0

I guess that's what I thought the idea was...but in the meantime it's so tedious.
Oh well, it won't feel tedious when the scale starts moving!
Thanks! :happy:0 -
Counting Calories for Life? No i don't think so, but I do think if you are trying to change your life by eating correctly, and being carefully picking out good foods, then counting calories is a Learning Tool. after a while of being accountable for living with the "If you bite it, Write it" rule.... you will kick into automatic mode of what to eat and what not to eat. there will always be a slip up here or there, but as the above poster said, .... Counting Calories, and learning about foods (some foods will surprise you) is like riding a bike with training wheels. Once you have learned how to stay balanced all on your own, then you can take the training wheels off..but you will fall and you have to get back up, and start again... (best to have some kind of safety gear to prevent injuries ...MFP!)0

Im definitely not going to!
But you should learn more about portion sizes, and when you reach your goal weight you should be in a routine by that time.
Ive always known how many calories are in things, ive just never cared about eating them. Now I realise how much I was over eating before.
I think it will be a bit obsessive if I did carry on counting calories but Im starting to feel apprehensive though about when I do meet my goal! I'll cross that bridge when I come to it0
