Come on now MFP peeps ....please share your exercises for slender legs. I have muscular calves but fatty thighs. Now I'm building muscle, but under the hefty blanket of fat ...result - massive legs. How do I shift this fat while toning???

I noticed a significant change in the shape of my legs when I started doing yoga... it might help, but from most of what I've read there's not much you can do in terms of losing fat in specific areas  I really wish that wasn't the case!

    you cant spot reduce!

WHY OH WHY THOUGH?!?!?! I have the same problem - hate it! I run 3 miles 3 times a week along with other exercises the other 3 days and not one inch lost from my thighs!

Cardio is really the best way to lose the fat. You can't "target" fatty areas to lose weight. You have to lose weight overall. What is positive is that themore you build your quads the more weight you will lose. These are the largest muscles in your body and the more muscle that is there, the more you will burn at rest and while working out. But to get rid of the fat I recommend a combination of running, biking, and swimming on a regular basis. Good luck.

Damn, just what I feared. I have always ridden horses, done kickboxing and snowboarding so have strong legs. Unfortunately I don't take after the 'chicken legs' side of the family *sigh* I have taken up running and yoga which has only made them bigger. And strangely made my knees wider, if that makes any sense??? :noway: My next question is, should I involve my legs in my weights programme or completely leave them alone? Ta

Try some of these things though:

    1. Fiber and protein are key - fiber keeps your body lean and protein boosts the effects of your exercise!
    2. Jump rope/exercise bike/spinning/swimming/jogging are best for thighs and all over weight loss.
    4. Avoid interval training and stick to long duration cardio instead if you feel like your legs and muscular.
    3. SQUATS & LUNGES
    4. Yoga and Pilates will make you leaner!
    5. Wear high heels!

Generally women see thighs and legs start to get skinny at around 18% body fat... HOLD ON ON THERE!

My question is this. Do you THINK they look bigger? or have you actually taken a starting measurement and they have actually gotten BIGGER?

This is the same for me, My upper body is a complete twig now, but my legs are still pretty thick, I have been cursed with the pear shape, HOWEVER now that I have lost a significant amount of fat off my upper body, I am now losing more weight off my legs, but as I lose weight they are looking mroe toned and BUILT and that makes them look bigger, but my clothes are getting loose, and my measurements are shrinking.

If you are relying completely on the scale it may just be a mind trick, keep at it, and lift weights, that will tone and strengthen your legs, the more muscle you have the faster you lose FAT. And Start measuring yourself.

Just measured - no change whatsoever from 12 pounds ago. Though I suppose I've got another 28 to lose...
Shame I didn't measure my knees at the start for comparison (but why would I have thought to do that?!)

I would say then, that you and I are built quite similar... I would kinda (if you can) push off your hope for results in the leg area until you are closer to your goal. I am 7 pounds away from my goal and am just now seeing results.

Each person is different, In 10 more pounds you may see a significant change. But I wouldn't worry about it right now.. you wont lose your fat evenly, it never happens that way, (in a perfect world maybe). So just keep on keeping on, and stick to your routine..

Be careful with long sessions of Cardio, the reason people say to do that is because it slims out your legs, because your body eats about 75 percent fat along with 25% MUSCLE! and that is not good. Your legs are your biggest muscle and are a HUGE contributing factor to how much fat you lose and how quickly, so by doing Ridiculously long cardio sessions you will only slow your progress that much more... If you do cardio (because it is super healthy to do) make sure to do strength training with your legs.

I have noticed the biggest difference in my legs since I started doing running matched with weight lifting.

I am very much an hourglass - very busty, relatively small waist and a good chunk of leg. Most of the weight I've lost has gone from my underbust area ....so maybe that's why it's bothering me, because I look unbalanced all of a sudden :ohwell:
