Lesson learned from this---check the 'net or ask the doc how quick meds kick in BEFORE TAKING!

I got back with my meds from the drug store this afternoon and popped one of my new diuretics. I assumed it would take until tomorrow to kick in--don't know why I assumed but you know what they say about assuming!

AFTER taking it, I looked it up on the 'net and found out it acts VERY quickly--and I'm here to testify that it does indeed! And, all the sites suggested taking it in the morning so you're not up all night :ohwell:

And, I'll say that apparently I was retaining more fluid than I thought

I have a feeling I won't be getting much sleep tonight.

No wonder the doc said I might not want to take it every day or before I go for a ride!

  • Well, that's good news, though!
Hopefully before you know it you'll see those pounds start shedding again!
    Good luck!
  • May I ask which diuretic was prescribed? I'm going to my doctor next week and I'm going to try to get her to prescribe one b/c I'm retaining a lot of fluid around my tummy.

It's called hydrochlorothiazide--don't ask me how to say it!

Interested to see what I'll weigh in the morning. I'm thinking I'll show a loss.

LOL, um...well it is probably the same...chemical names are pretty universal. I've skimmed over journal articles in German (and I don't know German) and found the information I've needed because it is so similar. I might be able to give it to you with an Irish or English accent (DH is Irish) but I have rarely heard a Southern accent.

the first part is hydro (as in a hydro electric plant - so however you say hydro)
the second is chloro (as in chlorine - you probably have used chlorine bleach or smelled chlorine in the pool-water)
the ending - let me get back to you on that.

Here is a pretty picture of it.

    OKAYYYY--

Second day on diuretic and lost ANOTHER 2 POUNDS!

    That's 4 pounds in 2 days!

Doc told me I might be surprised how much I was retaining. She looked at my legs and said she could see it--I couldn't but that's why I pay to go to the doctor's right? My socks were leaving marks on my legs, which I thought was just because my calves were too fat. Every sock I've ever owned leaves marks but she said it shouldn't leave marks like I had (mine were pretty impressive marks) unless it's fluid.

She also confirmed something Banks had told me (SHOUT OUT TO BANKS--YOU WERE RIGHT!)---that heavy exercise can cause fluid retention. Something about muscles hoarding water or something. Ask Banks--he knows all about it

So with the heavy cycling plus weight training I've been doing, my body has been holding onto apparently a lot of fluid.

So anyway--I'm drinking extra water, too, to make sure I don't get dehydrated.

She said to take it every day for a few days then only take it about every 2-3 days after that.

Not taking it today as it's Church day, and it would be difficult to be in the bathroom every 30 minutes
