Any one know how many calories are burned on a hike? Or how to calculate it accurately? Say 4/5 hours, with a summit of 2,000ft and about 11 miles? Its estimated nearly 3000 on here and that seems like way too many? I've googled it and it says anywhere between 350-900 an hour- a bit too big of range for me!

If you don't have a HRM...that's when I only eat back half of my exercise calories. If you eat them all ( which would be alot in this case) you will probably eating to many.

I hiked ten miles with about 1800 feet of elevation in 4.5 hours, wearing my HRM the whole time. It said I burned 2850 calories. I know backpackers burn 5000-7000 calories a day, easily!

Of course, calorie burn will vary based on your weight, how heavy your pack is, how challenging the terrain is, etc.

I don't think that's an unreasonable caloric burn. Sounds like a great time. Make sure you take your GPS for geocaching!
