A car needs to average 60mph over a two mile journey, if it averages 30mph for the first mile, how fast does it need to average for the second mile to achieve it's target?

    <---math teacher.

to get an average, you add up the items and divide by the number of items.

2 miles to go, so we will be dividing by 2.

first mile 30. add to that the speed we are looking for, X. Divide the result by two to get an average of 60.

    (30+x)/2=60

    X=90

Work out how long a car takes to do one mile at 30 mph?

Work out how long the car has for the entire journey?

    60mph for 2 miles takes 2 minutes.

30mph for 1 miles also takes 2 minutes.

Can I get one of those cars? I'd make a fortune doing deliveries.

Lol, me too......sounds easy doesn't it but actually it can't be done as the car has already taken the full two minutes to do the first mile.

I agree with this. You never stated that it needed to do this in two minutes. You just asked how fast it would have to go to reach the target of averaging 60 mph for the two miles.

    Ever try a TSD?

TSD rally: A form of motor sport usually conducted on public roads that focuses on Time, Speed, and Distance calculalations.

No, you work out that it needs to do it in two minutes from an average speed of 60 mph over 2 miles as per the question, 60 mph being one mile per minute.

Then apparently all my schooling and all my calculus has taught me incorrectly. I still disagree, but hey thats just one person.

I am hugely envious! I love my Subaru, but it's not nearly as sexy as yours. I have an '02 Outback Sport. It's still fun as heck, and it's a great car. It's my second Impreza, but certainly not my last. I'm holding out on getting a new car until my teen drivers have their own cars and pay for their own insurance.

Where's the Let's Talk About Our Subarus thread?

My car is extremely expensive to own and insure so I understand why everybody doesn't have one. I just have very messed up priorities.
