  • i like sara lee's 45 calories and delightful whole grain and whole wheat breads. only 45 calories a slice, and each slice is the same size as normal bread. a lot of the low calorie breads just have super small slices.

Is that in the frozen section, or regular bread section? I've never seen it. I get a 35 calorie oatmeal bread store brand, but, like you said, it IS pretty small!

What's the difference between whole grain and whole wheat?

I'd like to know the answer to that question too!
I'm also still waiting to find out WHERE to find it in the grocery store.

Wheat is a type of grain. Products labeled "whole grain" use the entire grain, rather then separating the germ and brand (fiber goodness) from the grain. There are many types of grain, so many baked products are made with grains other then wheat. "Whole weat" products are made with the entire wheat grain. Generally, whole wheat or whole grain products are better for you then "bleached" flour products (made with wheat or grains that have had the fiber stripped from them) because they are higher in fiber and therefore keep you feeling fuller longer. Whole grain products do not have less calories or carbs then bleached products, but their dense fiber content make up for their high caloric content.

Well thanks for that info, but I was hoping it'd be low in calories. Quinnybear said that Sara Lee is only 45 cals. I'd get it if it WAS, otherwise, I'll just stick to my 35 calorie oatmeal bread.

I use Nature's Own Light Whole Wheat Bread--regular size bread. Tastes like "regular" bread. Has 40 calories a slice with 10 carbs and 100 mg of sodium.

I also like Nature's Own Light Honey Wheat, same caloric content.

And, I'll sometimes use Nature's Own Double Fiber, which has 50 calories per slice with 13 carbs but 5 grams of fiber.

None of these have the impact on my Blood Glucose level like other breads. That's important for me, as I'm diabetic, but for a non-diabetic, it's also a good thing. If it doesn't cause a big spike in your BG levels, then it's taking longer to digest, which means you'll feel fuller longer!

Oh, and I buy it in the local grocery stores.
  • I'm pretty sure its the oils they bake into the bread that make it high in fat and calories, and low calorie breads probably just have less of these ingredients. I'm a fan of the Nature's Own Light Whole Wheat Bread, even my husband will eat it!

Be sure to read labels. Lots of times they say whole wheat or whole grain and when you check the ingredients the first one is enriched wheat flour. Enriched means its not whole - its stripped like sarakenna mentioned earlier. They can advertise with "whole grain" even if its not the primary grain in the product - usually 5 or 6 down the list. Look for "whole wheat flour" or "whole grain" as your first ingredient.
  • Pepperidge Farm and Arnold's both make good light breads that are whole grain about 40-45 calories per slice.

its in the regular bread aisle, its called "sara lee 45 calories and delightful." i buy it at wal-mart. and like i said before, its only 45 calories a slice and the slices are normal bread size!
