Planning meals ahead is definitely important. Not having stuff you shouldn't be eating in the house helps too.

Oh, and I fail if I skip meals and end up hungry, so make sure you eat your meals when you should.

Also, if you eat lots of fruit and veg and chicken / fish with carbs you'll feel far fuller for longer than if you get your calories from small quantities of high fat / high sugar foods.

EDIT: Gah, posted before I added - WELL DONE on giving up smoking. It's tough. If you can do that, you can deal with your weight.

all i can say is its not going to be easy.
i went cold turkey about 2 years ago, havent touched one since.
and every5 minutes i still really want a *kitten*!
no to mention when i want one i eat instead.
and now i always have to keep my hands busy with eating... nothing else seems to help.
and because of it i have gotten alot bigger..
honestly your going to get bigger and there is nothing you can do about it =[
all i can say was if i had the choice, and i was allowd to start smoking again i would instantly!

do your best to stay busy! I quit smoking a year and a half ago and am also trying to lose the weight i gained. Its definetly a battle to stay away from the chocolate and sweets.. as well as all the starches ive was stuffing my face with to avoid smoking... Good Luck!

That's hardly motivation for the OP! Everyone works differently - it won't be easy (that's for sure), but there are no closed doors for you.

I'm sure others will have advice on sticking to your plan, but I wanted to say: Congrats on quitting smoking! Because of that, you are healthier today than you were yesterday. You should be proud to say you are now a non-smoker! Wahoo!

Good for you! It isnt easy of course it isnt! I gave up nearly 4 years ago and I dont regret it for one moment, I now run and cycle and there is no way I could've done either. Oh yes and it stinks, keep that in mind you'll be richer fitter and less smelly..... no brainer.

drink water, chew gum, try to enjoy the stressy feeling in your chest..... good luck!

Well done! Don't think of what you're giving up, think of what you're gaining by quitting! Throw yourself into healthy eating and excercise and you'll be slimmer than ever! Stay strong!!

Congratulations! It's tough but you are going to LOVE it!

I gained some weight, but I made the decision to do whatever it took to stop smoking, and that meant candy for me. I would suggest carrots for any driving and also cut straws up the size of a ciggie to carry and chew on-it gives you that hand to mouth routine that we are so used to.

    Best of luck!
  • Im in the same boat. Had my last ciggeratte on Thursday!

Congratulations to You and Strongmama1987 on quitting smoking. Not an easy task at all, but sooo worth every discomfort including gaining a few pounds.
My advise is the same as others, plan you meals, don't keep junk food in the house and for sweets eat lots of fruit. Frozen grapes are a great distraction from smoking and taste wonderful.

I quit several years ago (lost track of how long). I actually didn't gain any weight, but I was exercising pretty frequently. Congrats and welcome to the non-smokers club. It's not easy, but doable. I'm in pharmacy school right now and when we learned about smoking cessation they said the weight gain will peak shortly after quitting and usually will come off, so there is hope! Good luck.
