Highly Frustation : PCOS or Testoterone

Hey all,

I am on the verge of giving up and I DONT WANT TO ! I am doing all the right things, eating 1200 calories per day with around 40% carbs, 40% protein and 20% fat... Exercising .. Cardio as well as strength training... but I am not losing any weight since past couple of months !

I was suspected of PCOS couple of years back... (although no cysts were found then), my sugar levels were healthy but my testosterone was high. I was put on metmorfin and contraceptive pills for almost 2 yrs.. I lost around 10 kgs on those medicines but I wasnt regular with my diet or workouts.... Last year, I decided to set my health and my life right.. and started working out and following a high protein diet from Aug 2010... and lost 22 kgs by December 2010.... I was off all sorts of medicines from Sept 2010... My menstrual cycles are kinda regular...

Recently, I have got a bad breakout around my chin and cheeks and shoulders, hair fall which led me to suspect that it may be PCOD or testosterone again.... I went for sonography but no cysts were found this time as well ! I have read millions articles on internet but nothing could help me !

The symptoms like acne and scalp thinning, hair fall and facial hair indicate testosterone mess up ! Can I have elevated testosterone but no PCOD ? Is high protein diet good for me ?????? Few articles state that high protein diet is good to balance the testosterone and few state that low protein diet elevates SHBG levels which binds to other hormones and makes them unavailable for use , elevated SHBG decreases available testosterone.

I am CONFUSED ! I really need some help here.. I have another 25 kgs to lose.. I am only half way to my goal weight. Please help me find a solution to this. ! I have visited GP but they hardly seem to be helping.

Many Thanks,

S.K.B

PS: I have my hormone (testosterone) test scheduled around second week of June

I'm sorry, I want to answer you but many of your questions seem like they are for a medical doctor.

I do want to say that I know what it's like to hit snags and plateaus and have to push through them. Remember, weight is only one (and perhaps the least important) indicator of progress. How do you feel? I've managed to take about 20 points off my systolic blood pressure by changing my lifestyle :) I generally feel better.

    Best of luck,

    Debbie

I would suggest seeing an endocrinologist. They can do the hormone tests AND interpret the results for you and hopefully give you a more detailed idea as to what is really going on! You can have high testosterone without PCOS. Seems that the best thing you can do is let your doctor know you are still worried... or, get a second opinion. Good luck!

I couldn't agree more on the fact that these questions are for the doctor to answer but unfortunately my GP is not helping me enough. They have scheduled me for my testosterone test which should be somewhere in second week of June. I know its a tricky situation because there are no cysts but still all the symptoms of PCOS or testosterone !

    Hi hun

I have PCOS and there are plenty of cycsts on my ovaries. That's the main indicator of PCOS. So I agree you can forget about that one, thankfully!!

I dont know what high testosterone implies, but as you have a scheduled appointment I hope they will let you know soon.

The only advice I have really, is that EVEN WITH a hormone imbalance like PCOS its not impossible to lose weight. It's much harder, but not impossible. Perhaps you've hit a plateau?? The fact that you've lost so much weight already, would indicate that you are physically able to lose more, so perhaps you need to try changing your routine? There are plenty of suggestions for overcoming plateau's in the forums.

Also, try taking Oil of Evening Primrose. This is great for rebalancing hormones naturally, but like with all supplements, can take a few months to work.

I'm sorry you're not losing, but from what I've read, its quite normal to plateau, especially as your body gets used to what's been lost already. Keep fighting!!

    All the best :flowerforyou:
