I wrote a research causal argument essay for my writing class over the weekend, and I pasted it to my blog. I figured I could share it here, too.

Further information can be found on the FAT BURNING capabilities of strength training elsewhere. Message me if you're interested.

    You're right on the money.
  • I would agree with everything here and using weights is my favourite part of working out.

Well I've just ordered a bench with weights to get started at home

Now I need a website that can show me the best workouts to do. Any recommendations please?

This was a great read. Since I've added weights to my workout, I really don't like cardio as much. I still do it of course, but I feel more of an impact with the weights. I was never worried about looking manly because that takes some serious commitment be it male or female.

Check out The New Rules of Lifting for Women by Lou Schuler--that is the program I am on right now. Also, you can check out bodybuilding.com. The program I am doing next is the link below.

Likewise! I have three cardio days per week--two of those days are pace/tempo (HIIT) training, and one day is an easily paced three mile run. I only run to improve my PT test for the Air Force. My favorite workout days are my strength training days, all the way! I love seeing improvements, and I love the definition and tone my body already has. I can't wait to see what I look like sans 10 more pounds of fat.

I would check out StrongLifts 5x5 over a body building program. Body building programs are primarily for size not strength. And there is no reason a woman needs a different program from a man, our bodies work the same way.

I agree totally that women should lift weights! I am currently mid P90X and love the changes that I have seen. I bought the New Rules of Lifting for Women and have read through it and just checked out the bodybuilding site. I am currently battling my stubborn spots (belly, thighs, and butt) and don't like that P90X only has one leg day. I will be glad when I can create my own to taylor my needs. I have however switched out Kenpo and the yoga for two HIIT days on my treadmill. I still do the Plyometrics though.
  • Wow thanks for all the suggestions.

They'll keep me busy once my weights arrive!!

I would check out muscleandstrength.com. It has a message board with some very knowledgable folks who are pretty friendly compared to some other weight lifting forums I've seen. They also have a buttload of videos and programs that show proper form and advice on weight lifting.

NROL has a lot of similarities to StrongLifts.

    3x per week.

Difference - unlike Stronglifts you're not only progressive loading with barbells. You are, however doing barbell squats, deadlifts, chest press over the course of 6 phases, progressively adding weight.

I saw NROL posted several times today so I looked into it and discovered that as well. My point was about the referenced isolation style bodybuilding program

There is a particular program on bodybuilding.com that focuses on the type of strength training I'm referring to, but yes, you're correct. Isolation exercises are definitely not as beneficial as compound exercises for strength training.

Yep. ITA everything above. I don't know why so many women are afraid of weights. AS IF it were that easy to build BIG muscles!!! (I wish!!) I for one want to be strong, and have strong bones as I age. No freakin' "I fell down & I can't get up!" scenarios in MY future!!

    I knew you'd say that, Bobert. :p

Thanks for doing the research and for sharing! It's amazing how much weight training helps. I'm going to get osteoporosis if I don't do more things to prevent it and I only recently discovered that weight lifting was just as high up there with taking calcium. Gotta do more than just packing kids around!
