I quit cold turkey 4 years ago. I didn't gain weight initially until 6 months after the fact, but I wouldn't say it was due to not smoking anymore. E-Cigs work and are not as bad for you. You still get nicotine through water vapor with no other harmful chemicals.
The best thing you can do though is to stay busy. Break the smoking out of your normal routines. Smoking in the car on my way to work and after meals was the hardest thing to get used to not doing. Personally I think people can quit without the crutch of nicotine helping them along the way, it's all about the will power.
Also, if you don't want to quit then you aren't ready to quit. The first step in quitting smoking is for you to say, "I want to quit and I am ready to do it."0
