Why do you stop?

I wasn't going to go on the treadmill today but ended up doing an 8minute quickie [4min jog 4min power walk] (LOL - please let it be said that I'm recovering from an injury and 8minutes is heaven to me!)

While I was staring at my neighbours back garden I started to ponder why I stop.

Lately it has been due to pain or the fact I can barely breathe due to my long break but other times it's a multitude of reasons.

Why do you stop? Is it because your legs won't take you any longer, or you can't breathe any faster? Or is it simply a time or distance thing?

Or is there a reason I'm totally overlooking?

I always wondered why people stop in the gym. There is this guy who used to run beside me every night when I used to train for my HM's. He was there when I came and there when I left and I always wondered if he was a robot, but people who can run for so long and have the time to do it. I always wonder why they decide to stop there and then.

I have a set time or distance that I am doing - so I stop when I hit it!

I try to set a goal, and if I reach it, sometimes I will stop other times, I just go til I am dizzy, and my legs feel like Jello!!! But I do always try to push myself a little farther and push through the pain!!!

I only go to the gym for 60 mins.

Since I do circuit training - I have a set time that I am on the treadmill before I move back to the weights.

I go to the gym during my lunch break, so I only have a limited time. I will generally do cardio for 30 to 45 minutes depending on what else I need or want to do that day.

When I'm on the bike or elliptical, I usually want to quit right away. But if I can push myself to keep going there is a point where suddenly my breathing slows and evens out, I start sweating and kinda go numb, usually around 12-15 minutes. After that I can go on and on.

I just tell myself to wait for it.

I doubt this helped any, I just wanted to relate.

I usually stop because I have hit the time that I have allotted myself or reached the mileage I wanted to go for that particular workout.

It's really interesting how many people use time and distance to do it.

I suppose that is what we should all aim for but I wonder if anyone just hits the gym and thinks I'm going to do this until I can't move any more xD!

When I was at full fitness in my teens - on a Sunday I would literally go until I couldn't move cause I had all the time in the world. (Then follow it up with a Sunday dinner so big I gained all the calories I burned back - good times!)

I did this w/ friends at the mall... we walked for 4 hours. Big mistake, I could barely move for 2 days after that and the giant blister on my foot was a killer!

I usually have a time frame I put in my head, and try to do a little more each day. I do 15-30 mins on the elliptical in the morning, and then 30-60 min walk at night.... though my walks are more based on getting about a block further than I did the day before and then I turn around and head home.

For cardio I generally set a goal time. At times I will hit that, and push myself to do another 10-15 min just to see if I can do it. After consistantly pushing through the extra that becomes me new "goal." With weights, I always do 3 sets of 15 reps. When I want to really push it, challenge myself to do an extra 5 reps. Nothings too adventurous, just enough to push myself.

My gym has a 90 minute time limit for childcare...that's usually what makes me stop. I gogogogogo for 85 minutes and then dash to the restroom to wash my hands and wipe the sweat off my face and go pick up my little gremlins.

It's a luxury to go to the gym without kids and not have to keep checking the clock! That usually only happens on Sunday afternoons, and they close early on Sundays, so then I'm usually there until they close.
