Lap Band surgery?

Options
I would like to share my experience with all of you.....I am actually a little dissapointed and here is why. I have been doing so many jo-jo diets for years now and I am ready for a change....a new life style! So, my doctor saw my frustration and send me to some weight management program. I was extremely excited. My first appointment was yesterday and I left that office extremely upset. The endocrinologist suggest I get the lap band surgery withing the first 10 minutes of the appt. I was like WTH? I am only 50 lbs over weight and here is...a specialist telling me to consider surgery? I was like, what ever happened to try loosing weight with low calories and excersise. This doctor was looking for second diagnosis so my insurance could cover for the surgery, withing 5 minutes she asked me if i have ever diagnosed with PCOS and on and on.....its crazy....HELLO, i am only 31 years old...I love to work out! So i have been literally depressed since that appointment.....i have decided to give 110% for 6 months and see if i get any results if not, then i guess i will consider surgery but is really not my first option. Sorry for the long thread...i needed to let off so i could feel better...thanks

Would you consider Lap Band Surgery without giving your best first?

No way, and it's unethical of this dr. to suggest it. If you do end up having the surgery, go to another dr. One that's actually interested in your health rather than his stats or money.

I always get angry when people do the surgery without trying on their own first. I think it's a good thing for those who truly need it, however, I also think some people jump to surgery way too quickly without giving themselves any credit for being able to do it on their own. Unfortunately, some docs only see dollar signs. $$$$ :(

I think weightloss surgery is total bull **** and a cop out. I've tried every diet known to man. None of them worked! I got my head fixed! I saw a shrink, delt with my issues and now I've lost a total of 100 pounds in 18 months. I have so many friends who have had weightloss surgery and 6 or so years later have gained it all and more back! They nver took the time to fix how they think and find out why they are how they are. My friend Erin died in recovery. She only had 50 pounds to lose. I figure I got myself this fat, I need to work my *kitten* off to lose it.

i considered lap band surgery before i found mfp and i would NEVER do it, just google it and look it all the horrible things that happen such as gaining it all back after adjustments and plateauing while still on it making you have to work like crazy to lose weight, having to eat very slow or you will throw it all up. Now im not saying that this is the case for everyone. You will indeed find good results as well on google. But i dont think going under the knife is worth it. My doctor told me weight loss is just about the calorie game, nothing more nothing less. succeed at that and you will lose weight. I think its funny how doctors have resorted to tightening our stomachs to give the sensation of being full, you can starve yourself (respectably speaking) no different than the lap band does. ive seen so many people on MFP do great things, some as high as 500 pounds and they came back just fine. im no doctor, and always do what you feel is right, but if you see positive progress with mfp i don't see what the harm would be in sticking with it for a couple months. and most of all don't be discouraged ! Like another user said find another doctor if you pursue this route, most doctors avoid this surgery until ABSOLUTELY everything has been tried and verified. good luck :)

I concidered in once upon a time, but with only 50 lbs to loose it sounds pretty extreme. If you do get the lap band, you still have to change your eating habits, so if you can do it without, you will not need surgery. Most behavior changes that come with the lap band is just avoiding foods that get caught in the band.

I have one friend with a lap band who has had it I think 3 years and is doing great.

The flipside, there is a 30 yr old girl I workd with who did not do so well. She did ok the first year. Then she had gotten the flu, and with all the throwing up, the band moved and it had to be removed, and then when they were trying to get it out the Dr. hit an artery and she almost bled to death. Now that the lap band is out, she is heavier than she every was.
