... why they put so much sugar in the cereal flakes?

... why cheese has so much salt (I know, jamerz, if not mistaking, has posted on this already)

... why ham has so much salt?

... why fruit yogurts have so much sugar?

... why IceTea and alike drinks have so much sugar?

Why, oh why?

My theory - instant gratification society. We're all busy, but who takes time these days to really prep whole foods for ourselves, so the quicker the food, the better (well for most). The companies know how important it is to make it taste great, so all those bad additives are merely for added flavor and a lot of the items they use for them is cheap.

Salt is a preservative, and like sugar makes things taste good.

As a side note-I don't eat cereal. Oatmeal with a banana and brown sugar mixed in makes a great healhty alternative! Yum:happy:

The only cereal I will eat is bran flakes, and I do believe that has a little sugar in it, although not as much as others.

What I wouldn't do for a bowl of Frosted Shredded Mini-Wheats...mmmmmm

for yogurt, i buy organic or soy versions, they usually have waaaaaaay less sugar, but they are very yummy! they dont stay good as long, but they are lower in sugar/preservatives

Anyone every try rice-milk ice cream? Can't do dairy, but rice-milk is an occasional OK.....
  • Salt and sugar are both preservatives. Foods like ham needed to be really salty to survive a winter without refrigeration. Some "traditional" i.e. nonrefrigerated hams have so much salt that it crusts on the outside.

When fruits were canned (again, before refrigeration), you had to add a lot of sugar to get the fruit to "set" or jell. Also, the large amounts of sugar in syrups and preserves acted as preservatives.

Farm people in the past who ate these foods needed to worry more about food poisoning than being overweight. Also, they were working hard all day long and sweated it off. Today we have refrigeration and we sit at desks, drive cars, etc - but our "traditional" tastes in food still lean towards a lot of sugar and salt.

Sugar in yogurt is a dreadful idea - IMO it's because people don't like the "sour" yogurt taste. It's better to buy plain yogurt and add your own fresh fruit, rather than rely on those little packages that are basically like liquid yogurt candy.
