what do you recommend to use to determine how many calories i burn during exercise? i've heard about a heart rate monitor, but is there a specific kind? one better than another? a different tool altogether?

Well you can use estimates from the site, but a HRM is a good idea. I have the polar ft4 and absolutely love it. I haven't had any problems with it!

Polar FT4 is what I have and I love it. Make sure whatever you do, don't get one without a chest strap, because it'll just be useless. You have to have the chest strap to get a continuous heart rate reading.

I have a Polar FT4. It only cost $70 on Amazon. It is easy to use. It was easy to program. I use it every day. It will keep record of your last 10 workouts so you can track your progress. It is waterproof. I use mine in the pool every day...I just make sure I rinse it well. It has a chest strap. Whichever one you get...make sure it has a chest strap. It tracks your heart rate directly and is the most accurate. I hope this helps!!

I've got a Polar FT4 as well, and I love it. You can find one on ebay or Amazon for about $70-$90. I've heard that the cheaper ones from discount stores tend to not work. It's a good investment to get a reliable one.

Definitely get one with a chest strap! Polar seems to have the best overall reviews. I have a Timex Ironman and have really liked it.

I just got the Polar ft4 also, after reading soo many comments (all positive) about it on MFP. I really like it. My treadmill really overestimated calories burned, i did not use those numbers but used MFP's. After getting my HRM i feel like i am no longer guessing.
