What are some foods that will help with lowering the blood sugar. My blood sugar is fine, but my grandmother has diabetes and her blood sugar is always going up. I am trying to help her because I have been eating healthy but Im not sure what foods is best for her. breakfast and small snacks is usually where she take in the most sugars.

Check out the American Diabetes Assoc web site http://www.diabetes.org/ They have menu suggestions and even a free cookbook and menu planner for diabetics.

Carbs = blood sugar. More carbs, more blood sugar. However, more fiber in the food, less carbs converted into sugar. Therefore, if you/she eats bread or pasta, try to make it as whole grain as possible with as much fiber as possible.

When I was diagnosed, the nutritionist told me that if the fiber grams are >5, then I could take 1/2 the fiber grams and subtract from the carbs. So, for instance, something has 30g Carbs and 10g Fiber, then 30-5 = 25g Carbs.

The "low carb" food calls this "net carbs" - however, their fiber count normally isn't high enough to go with this formula of >5g fiber.

I've been trying to eat 5 servings of fruit a day, and eating more fresh vegetables, less meat - if eating meat, then SMALL portions of chicken. Hardly any beef. Avoiding bread, when I eat it, whole grain and small portions. Avoiding rice and pasta.

Doing this for 3 months, I've lost 30+ pounds.

My diabetic checkup blood lab results: before/after - notice the blood glucose numbers are almost in the "normal/non-diabetic" range.

    Comprehensive Metabolic Panel:
    Glucose 164/89 Limits/Goals: 70-99

    Lipid Profile:
    Cholesterol 166/138 Limits/Goals: 0-200
    Triglyceride 183/83 Limits/Goals: <150
    HDL Cholesterol 40/35 Limits/Goals: >39
    LDL Cholesterol 89/86

Total Chol/HDL Radio 4.2/3.9 Limits/Goals: CHD Risk: 1/2 Average for men is 3.4

And the big daddy for Diabetics:
    Hemoglobin A1C 7.4/5.8 Limits/Goals: <5.7% (5.7-6.4 is "increased risk" >6.5 is Diabetes Mellitus)
