high heart rate and heat...?

went this morning to do my 3.4 mile jog. it was the warmest i've ever been outside jogging in so far - soaked in sweat and all that. my heart rate was hovering around 160 and got up as far as 180 - no matter how slow i tried to shuffle along and still call it a jog, it stayed up a lot higher than usual.
typically when i run this, my heart rate hovers around 148 and will max at around 163. is the heat affecting me that much, or could it be something else? i don't know if i should feel worried or not...

The heat puts more of a strain on your body, I could see it raising your HR0

I've noticed that too. It's been extremely hot/humid here and my HRM gives a higher reading for my usual walk. Same route, time, distance, playlist, etc, but I've noticed on hot days, I seem to burn more. I don't know if there's any science behind it, but I definitely feel it and my HRM picks it up.0

I'll only speak for myself, but heat and humidity raises my heart rate when I run as well...you have to work a lot harder when the temperatures start going up. Be careful, and just take it easy when you need to. If this is the warmest weather you've run in, then you'll probably just have to acclimate to the weather. Just be sensible and listen to your body...and STAY HYDRATED. :flowerforyou:0

One of the mechanisms for removing heat from the body is to dilate the capillaries near the surface of the skin. This increases the blood flow to that area and allows the blood to cool down. I suspect the heart rate increases to improve the blood flow so more blood can be exposed to the skin surface more quickly. However it does not represent a change in oxygen consumption and so the HRM will overestimate calories burned for that session, I'm pretty sure.0

for me, my hrm reports the following:
sitting in my living room: about 65 bpm
sitting in the dry sauna: about 110 bpm.

For your age 160-180 is still within range but for the average person hitting 180 is a bit high (depends on your actually MHR). My experience with heat is that is really more of an issue when the season changes and you are not used to it. Once you get used to running in the heat your body should adjust.
You could also run earlier in the day to avoid the heat.
Also how hydrated are you keeping yourself? Do you have an option to run a treadmill in A/C controlled building on very hot days?0 -
thanks everyone! i'm pretty good about keeping hydrated, and as the summer comes along, i will stick to running in the evenings or at my gym. thanks again!0

When I had high blood pressure, the heat would kill me....it would make my heart beat sooooo fast....If it continues to worry you, or does it everytime in the heat..I might get it checked out just to be safe...0
