Greets all!
Normally for lunches I get subway subs (every day). However, I'm starting to run low funds wise, and I was thinking of starting to make my own sandwiches and brown bagging it to work.

I'm trying to figure out a way to make sure the sandwich is low in sodium, calories, and fat, but still doesn't a) taste like cardboard, and b) leave me feeling like I didn't eat anything. Usually subway sandwiches are less than 300 calories and thats for a 6" sub. So can any of you suggest lunchmeat, cheese, and bread that are good, good for me, and will cost less than 12.50 for a week supply?

    Less than $12.50 for a week's supply?

I'm not sure that is possible. Unless you maybe be cheap tuna or something.

Look for the low-sodium deli meats in the stores. Check for stores running specials on it! Cheese is high in sodium, so no getting around that. And I HATE lo-fat cheese

    Bread--whole wheat. I buy Nature's Own Light. But it's over $3 a loaf.

Do you eat Tuna? That's usually not to bad, Mix in a little shredded letuce, low fat mayo and melba toast.

We also will get a huge bag of chicken breasts, lay them all out on a cookie sheet, season them and bake them then cut them up into little chunks and then divide them in to 3oz portions and put them in baggies and freeze them. then when we need a quick meal you just take out 1 package and nook it and then eat it with some low carb tortillas with some brocoli slaw or shredded letuce and fat free ranch or salsa

Dang, maybe I should just stick with subway then. a 6" sub every day comes out to 12.50 if I get 5$ footlongs and split them over 2 days.

I usually buy pre-packaged deli meats so I can see the nutritional values easily. Butterball has some really low-cal turkey and ham but I've found the store brand is usually just as good. Not many preservatives either. My best friend recently discovered she has high blood pressure and cholesterol and when she checked out the deli meats she had to have them pull all of the meats out and let her look at each one. It was amazing how many more preservatives and salt they had in them!! So, prepackaged is a little more expensive but easy to get the facts on. If you're willing to do the research though I'm sure you'll save money at the deli counter.

As for cheese, well, seems like its all expensive! I stick with laughing cow for my sandwiches and I find that I don't really need a whole wedge so I usually split them in half. Kraft makes low-fat and no-fat slices but they are really processed.

Bread, I love the Pepperidge Farm Carb Style and Soft Style 100% wheat bread. The Soft style is 45 slices/piece but it is thin and small. Personally it helps me keep my sandwich smaller and I hated wasting 200cals on bread (most of the other bread I found was 90-110 cal/slice). Arnold makes really good bread too, higher in calories but definitely more substantial. They are made by the same company as Pepperidge Farm. You might also consider wraps. I love the Tam-X-icos tortillas!

    Hope that helped

Opt for home made chicken or tuna or ham salad or Boars Head all natural lunch meats and white cheeses.

As for bread? I do the sara lee or natures own fiber, wheat and low carb or sugar free, ryes or pumpernikle.

I use the sargento deli style slices swiss and it has 70 calories for one slice and 40mg of sodium.

Today for lunch I had natures own whole wheat bread 100 calories for 2 slices
one piece of swiss cheese 70 calories
Sara lee fresh ideas honey roasted turkey breast 2 slices 25alories
Sara lee fresh ideas honey ham 2 slices 30 calories

    some mustard
and then I had a snack size pack of Chiquita Apple Grape Bites 40 calories
My whole lunch was 265 calories and 775 sodium.

Even with breakfast and lunch it still says I have almost 1100 mg of sodium left for the day.
