First get fitted for some good running shoes... it may set you back a bit... but oh so worth it...
I started walking in January... and then started walking so fast, it was ridiculous... my legs were hurting cuz I was walking so fast... I gradually added in jogging.... and started Couch to 5K program... loved it... and started running more.... now I can do up to 3.5 miles at a decent pace 5.5 to 5.8 without stopping...
If you have a smart phone... down load runkeeper.com and track what you run / walk.
stretch, stretch, stretch!!! water... and GO FOR IT... IT'S ADDICTING!!!!

I found the c25k (couch to 5k) programme invaluable.
It takes you from doing nothing (couch!) to being able to run for 30minutes or 5km (depending on if you run for distance or for time as well as running speed) in 9weeks. Google it, it seriously works. Its interval running - run for 1minute, walk for 90seconds with the running time building up and the walking time decreasing week by week.0 -
Go for a walk (in decent shoes--cross trainers in good shape, at least, if not true running shoes). After at least 10 minutes of walking warmup, run until you feel like stopping. Might be 25 seconds, might be 5 minutes. Then walk some more. Then run again--try to go a little farther than the first time. Repeat. Seriously--I got from "couldn't run a mile" to "4-time marathon finisher" that way. I don't know the details of Couch to 5K but a lot of people on here seem to use it. I think running an entire 5K after a couple of months is a good first goal, then you can decide how much more you want to develop your running life, if at all. You might be happy with regular short runs or you might want to take it farther.0

put one foot in front of the other and repeat really fast ;P I am a smart *kitten*.. sorry but in all seriousness, When I started out running, I could only run for like 3 minutes at a time with out slowing down or stopping. And gradually built up to make it through a whole song on a ipod, then 10 minutes, 30, 60, etc.... Running takes a lot of time to build endurance to. So just be patient and dont give up. Running hurts sometimes but it so beneficial and a great calorie burning workout!0

I need to get back into it, but I had a system when I got into jogging before. When I was jogging outside I started by running two minutes and walking for three. I did this for a total of thirty minutes 3-5 days a week. Every week I would boost the length of time I was running (i.e run 3 min and then walk 3 min), and you can move up in intervals that work for you. During the winter I would go to the gym to use the treadmill. I would always have music to listen too. There I would just do intervals like I did outside. When I got up to running a full 30 minutes and that got too easy I would increase speed some days and increase the incline on others. Hope this helps0

A lot of people swear by C25K. Great if you are disciplined and self-motivated. Personally, I'm not :-) I would also suggest looking to see if there are any running stores or clubs nearby that offer a beginners running training class or group - basically the same as C25K but with other people - great way to meet other people at a similar level - lots of fun, you train together and a coach works with you - for me, this really helped to keep me in a routine. Either way, the secret is gradually escalating run/walk intervals and increasing the amount of time/distance. I've seen lots of people start in this type of program and move up to running half and full marathons - really, anyone can do it if you're willing to put in the time. Good luck!0

I did C2k5. Great program to get you into running. Completed my first 5K last weekend.0

Hi! I read your question and was very excited to read the responses. I hadn't heard of c25k but will look into it now. I had started a similar program that Jillian Michaels had on her web site some time ago (I printed it out and saved it). My problem is that I used to be a runner, and even did one marathon about 20 years ago. I totally stopped running about 6 - 8 years ago, and packed on about 60 lbs. I tried the walking, running routine and had problems because I weighed so much. My feet hurt and when the program jumped in week three to a fair amount of running I just quit. I also made the mistake of logging all my miles on a treadmill which didn't translate well to running on the roads. I had good running shoes because I went to a nice running store and got fitted, and ran for them and the whole bit. I put inserts (Super Feet) in my shoes and it still didn't help.
I now think that I need to lose some weight through bike riding, swimming, elliptical, and weight training before I try again. I don't know what you weigh, but I think you need to listen to your body. I can't wait to run again, and will probably try c25k on my next go around.
Keep going!0
