Don't wear cotton. Look for places that sell athletic wear and ask the workers what they recommend.0

Thanks for that do anyone else have words of wisdom?

I do a lot of running in the rain. I have a rain-proof windbreaker and rainproof running cap, plus I have water proof gloves and socks made by SealSkinz. Not sure if you can get them in NZ. A good UnderArmour baselayer will keep you warm too once you start moving. As an alternative, I use Smartwool/Merino Wool baselayer because it keeps me warmer, but of course when the wool gets wet you'll smell a little bit like a sheep...
I did a run recently while visiting family in Vancouver. In typical PNW fashion, the rain came down hard, but I was nice and dry, and warm.0
