PLEASE READ ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE GIRLS ! ! !

I checked snopes and this is true.

Be cautious of hair bands at open markets around the city too - they are probably from China since they are purchased in bulk very very cheap !!!!
Take a good look before buying hair bands in future - specially like the following kind.....

..

These Hair bands were made from used condoms and threads. ..

BEIJING (AFP) - Used condoms are being recycled into hair bands in southern China threatening to spread sexually-transmittable diseases they were originally meant to prevent, state media reported Tuesday.

In the latest example of potentially harmful Chinese-made products, rubber hair bands have been found in local markets and beauty salons in Dongguan and Guangzhou cities in southern Guangdong province, China Daily newspaper said.

'These cheap and colorful rubber bands and hair ties sell well ..... threatening the health of local people,' it said. Despite being recycled, the hair bands could still contain bacteria and viruses, it said.

'People could be infected with AIDS, (genital) warts or other diseases if they hold the rubber bands or strings in their mouths while waving their hair into plaits or buns,' the paper quoted a local dermatologist who gave only his surname, Dong, as saying. A bag of ten of the recycled bands sells for just 25 sen (three cents), much cheaper than others on the market, accounting for their popularity, the paper said.

A government official was quoted as saying recycling condoms was illegal. China 's manufacturing industry has been repeatedly tarnished this year by a string of scandals involving shoddy or dangerous goods made for both domestic and foreign markets.

In response, it launched a public relations blitz this summer aimed at playing up efforts to strengthen monitoring systems.

Check your kids hair bands and make sure they do not put them in their mouth while trying to plait or tie their hair.

Okay how many of you have held a hair band in your teeth while trying to fix hair. No wonder mom always said don't put that in your mouth because you don't know where it's been. Now that I know it might have been on a China mans winky I think I might be sick.

Honestly, I read the article and I don't believe it. The article is written to imply a lot but confirm nothing. It just doesn't make sense. How/where would they get supplies? It flies in the face of all common sense.

Please DO read the Snopes url.....it would appear that "it is not clear" , in other words not possible to substantiate the idea that this is a plot to spread disease.

The idea is that the condom FACTORIES are remarketing the substandard or otherwise unacceptable condoms to the hairband companies. Which IS illegal, however the notion that PEOPLE are "using" the condoms and then purposely making them into hair bands is (if I read Snopes correctly...)is one of those possibilities that the internet just loves to throw out to raise folks blood pressure.

The site also only traced these items only to areas in China, not the US.

    So to sum it up:
Are condoms (in CHINA) being recycled to make hairbands.....YES
Are these condoms "used" for sex before being recycled....doubtful

That is what I got from the article as well, that they were actually condoms from the factory that didn't make the cut, not necessarily "used" ones that could pass on disease. I mean, why on earth would they waste time and money searching for "used" ones to make them out of? Though it does worry me a little that Snopes said true, rather than inconclusive or whatever they say when something has some truth to it but isn't as bad as it sounds. But I never considered my hair bands to be cheap so I guess I am safe, haha.
