So I sprained my ankle (non-sports related) and was wondering if anyone had any ideas of some easy cardio moves that won't aggrevate it. I'm going to look around the net, but am always open to any suggestions from the MPF community!

Thanks ;)

Swimming and/or aquasize classes. They're very low impact and still a great work out!

I sprained the bejezuz out of my ankle 4 weeks ago. This week I finally started walking for exercise and getting back on the elliptical. The first week after the sprain I didnt do any exercise. Second week I got on the bike. It was ok. I would suggest biking cuz it worked for me. I am still a little afraid to run. Maybe in the next few weeks. Dont push it!!

There are all kinds of chair exercises you can do. Butt crunches while driving or sitting at your computer. Leg lifts. Arm lifts (while holding hand weights or bottles of water - did you know a gallon jug of water weighs 8 lbs?? I just found that out!). Or you could do yoga - no impact at all, but still a great workout. I thought it was a bunch of crap until I tried it. I like the swimming idea, too.

Whatever you do, DON'T let it set you back!
  • My 16 year old is recovering from a bad sprained ankle. She has been doing the bike and elliptical without much aggrevation to the injury, along with upper body strength training. Walking, running, and swimming (I think the flexing motion when kicking) bothered it... Good luck to a speedy recovery!

This! Or step it up and do cardio boxing while sitting on an exercise ball! This is what I did when I sprained my ankle, plus upper body calisthenics/weights. Stayed right on track.

Did you actually go to the doctor and confirm that it is a sprain? You don't want to engage in any activities that could further injure you without seeking professional medical advice. I thought I sprained my ankle badly while running a couple of months ago, and it turned out that I broke the darn thing. Made a big difference in what I was allowed to do while I was recovering.

Moses on the Biggest Loser did shadow boxing to keep losing weight after he injured himself in the first few weeks on the ranch. I agree, you should get it checked out by a doctor to make sure it's just a sprain and not something else. You should still be able to do upper body strength training as well. Make sure whatever you do is a low-impact activity. When I sprained mine, even just walking hurt me for 2 months after the injury.

Thanks for all your support and suggestions! I've been sticking to yoga and low impact cardio. It's only been a week and there is a huge difference already in how it feels and the mobility it has. I haven't been to a doctor yet - I know - but I am out of province and will be back home soon.
