Arghh problems with HRM

I bought myself a polar RS100 HRM 2 weeks ago and until 2 days ago though it was great. However it has now started giving very low HR readings (30/35 at rest and 60/65 running maximum). I've been on the polar website and gone through all their troubleshooting advice which has made no difference.
To make matters worse I took it back to the shop expecting it to be exchanged but no, the salesman told me that actually 30/35 beats per minute is a normal resting heart rate (I'm a nurse and have yet to come across a patient with this resting heart rate), that there's nothing wrong with it and at best he will send it back to polar for them to have a look.
Does anybody else with HRM have the same problems with theirs giving dodgy readings?

It definitely sounds wrong , 30-35 is NOT a normal resting rate, and if your running at a good speed I would think it should go higher than 60-65.
If your a nurse, then you should be able to take your own pulse and compare.0 -
I have taken my own pulse to compare, it's usually between 60/70 at rest and shoots right up to 180 when I'm running (I've only just started running and very unfit). I explained this in the shop but he wasn't interested. I'll just have to wait for it to come back from polar but wondered if it's a common fault.0

I used to get dodgy readings on mine. I have Polar FT40M. I found out after reading the directions a few times it was the strap. I was rinsing it with water before and after each use. It states in the manual that after so much use you need to machine wash it as well. I usually toss it in the washer after 7-10x a use or once a week for me. After I did that and it was working fine again.0

Unlikely but it once happened to me with mine - have you definitely got it set to display the heart rate in BPM? I once had mine set to display my heart rate as a percentage and it was coming back with these 30 - 40 readings and I almost sent it back before realising my mistake!
I don't know if all Polar HRMs are the same but you should be able to go to settings > hr set > hr view > (and make sure it's set at) hr (not hr %).0
