Help!! I am going over for dinner at a friends house this evening and I'm dreading it as this is one of my many weak areas. Short of taking my portable weighing scales - I need somehow to guage how big my portions size is. I know a few tricks eg:

Jacket potato should be any bigger than a clenched fist. A 30g piece of cheese is about the size of a matchbox (UK) and chicken breast 100 gr portion is about the size of your palm.

Has anyone else got any others?? Pasta and rice is one that I always misjudge badly!!!!

I will be having wine tonight - but somehow I will need to moderate this. (I would drive - but she's litterly next door!!!)

Would love to hear your thoughts

I think you are doing good portion control size wise. A thing I learned last weekend when I had wine....full of sugar, which is a problem if you are trying to lose weight. Sugar also causes cravings. Try to make it a spritzer by mixing it 50/50 with some diet soda/pop. Still a great taste but half the calories, sugar, etc... Enjoy yourself tonight.

Self control. If you want this to work you have to have will power. I know you can do it. You wouldn't be here if you couldn't.
Good luck and work out a little extra tomorrow if you think you have gone over on your calories.

Try to avoid the pasta as will add up real quick with your wine, etc. Focus on veggies if served and drink extra water! Plus remember that you need to enjoy yourself once in a while too so if you have to many calories, work out! Good Luck!

Eat before you go. That way you won't be very hungry and over eat.

I try and take more veg and less carbs (pots, pasta etc) but still have some. I also have wine but usually add soda/fizzy water so it last longer.

Do you know what you are having?

    Thanks Guys.

Dellonious1 - that is a fantastic help - exactly the sort of thing I was looking for.

Desirai - I daren't eat before I go!! Unfortunately you get to my size because you can eat even if you feel full!!!! lol!!

I will have willpower - however I want to make sure I log the right sort of number of cals. My friend is a veggie hater which doesn't help so she never has enough salad or veg to go around so I will have to be very careful what I put on my plate.

    Really appreciate all the responses.
