Adujsting From a Nutrition Panel

I am making rice pilaf with dinner tonight. The instructions say to include (if I wish) 1 TBSP butter or margarine. I choose not to ... so when I use the nutritional information on the package, which is for 2oz (1/3 cup) prepared, how would I go about reducing the calories correctly? The box says it makes approx. 3 servings, so would I reduce each of the values (calories, fat, etc) by 1/3 of what is contained in 1 TBSP butter? For example, the butter I use is 100 calories per TBSP, so would I reduce the 190 calories per serving by 33 for a net of 157 calories per serving??

  • if the pkg says its optional then it most likely isn't included in the nutrition information

Now that it's cooked and measured out, I realize the serving size they list is for what's only in the box. I hate packages that don't give both 'as packaged' and 'as prepared' ...

I used a measuring cup to be sure and after scooping out 3 servings, I still had half left. Prepared serving size is 2/3 cup, so nutritional info must not have included the butter.

    Thank you for replying :)

The butter isn't included on the nutrition panel. The "prepared" refers to the rice only, since rice plumps when you cook it.
