I really want to do some form of exercise but I have had a bad ear infection most of this week! I can hardly hear out of my ear it's so full of fluid but I don't like taking the time off from working out. Can I do any form of working out without making my condition worse?

I'd say it probably depends on how your balance is being affected by the ear infection. If you're steady on your feet and not dizzy, just play it by 'ear' and do a light cardio workout.

    "By ear". Nice. :)

If it doesn't make you dizzy, try taking a walk at a relatively slow pace. You'll still get exercise and burn calories, but won't aggravate your condition. If you don't feel up to it, though, don't force the issue, because you can make things worse.

If you have some two or three pound weights you could always sit in a chair and do some strength training with the weights like butterflies and arm curls. It's what I do on dizzy days. I keep sinus and ear infections so I have to work around the bad days. You can also lift your legs up while sitting in a comfortable chair and act like you are riding a bicycle in the air, or if you have a recliner like I do, I do sit ups when I am in the reclined position. Hope that helps :-)

Strangely, when I have an ear infection doing the elliptical or swimming (with ear plus) actually seems to help open my eustachian tubes. Something to consider. The only time I "stop" is when I have bronchitis or lung issues. The general rule I have seen is "In your head, go ahead; in your chest, get some rest."
  • I would recommend waiting until you feel better to start working out again.

From the fitness articles I've read, you should take a week off from exercising neway in order to give your body time to recuperate. Its recommended you take a break after every couple of weeks of working out. So think of this time of healing as your break and get back at it when your feeling better!

I used to be in the Army, I always enjoyed the phrase, "Suck it up and move forward!"

in this case I would say continue to exercise...
