To eat your exercise calories or not? + starvation mode theo

In another thread I talked about starvation mode theory. Some people said "it exist, because when i don't eat i don't lose weight" some say "starvation mode doesn't exist because I continue to lose weight fine." So who's right who's wrong? They're both right and both wrong.
So what gives. Macro nutrients such as carbs/protiens/fats all have a specific biochemical response in the body. Some hold on to fat, some get rid of fat. So if you're eating low calories and high carbs, you won't have much success losing bodyfat. And you will loose muscle, sounds a lot like starvation mode doesn't it? oh yeahhhhh
Studies have shown eating more protein helps preserve muscle mass. You know what also helps slow muscle loss? fat does. Dietary fat helps improve lipolysis (break down of fatty tissue). There was a study on rats that shows when they're on a high fat diet their muscles don't break down as much. Improved lipolysis, means you will mostly use fat for energy. When carbs in the muscle are exhausted they start to break down the protien in the muscle which causes muscle loss. In taking dietary fat lets fat be the primary source for fuel.
Stu Mittleman an elite marathon runner, He has ran from San Diego to New York. He supports this theory. He says "when people go to a high fat diet, it turns your metabolism to a fat burning metabolism not a sugar burning metabolism." HOw can he run such long distances with out the irony and muscle soreness?? Because he's mostly getting his energy from fat, not from muscle carbs. His glycogen stores really don't deteriorate, it's like he's walking, fat burning mode.
Some will interpret this data as "eat high protein and high fat." If you want to die of rabbit starvation go ahead. Too much protein can be toxic and deadly.
What do carbs actually do? They get converted to blood glucose. This creates insulin to raise, what does insulin do? It's a storage hormone, it stores glucose in the muscle, what happens when your glucose stores are full? They store it as fat. This is why too many carbs can make people fat. Even if you only eat 1000 calories of just pure carbs a day. Your "supposed" starvation mode.
This is why people who exercise and are on low caloric diets can't take the weight off. This is why people who are on a low caloric diet and who exercise CAN take the weight off. Doesn't have one thing to do with the "starvation mode." It's about the macro nutrient ratios you're consuming.
I already talked about insulin and how carbs affect that. What also effects that is the amount of calories you consome. If you consume too many calories, it will cause insulin to raise. If you're not getting the results you want, it's due to 1 thing, insulin. If you're eating a decent amount of calories with no results, it's because your carbs are too high. On the other hand if your carbs are low, with no results, that means your calories are too high. This is why some people have difficulty with low carb diets.
I discussed the dangers of high carb, also the dangers of high protein diets. So what is one to do? For beginners, a balanced diet is best.

wow that's a lot to say LOL
here's my balance... 50% protein, 30 carbs 20 fat.... i avoid sugar laden foods. my carbs come from fruit & vegetables & low carb breads... and some pizza crust... and everything has a few carbs in it along the way... Honestly I don't think anyone can talk me into doing anything differently than that because I FEEL AMAZING. I have more energy than I can handle! I'm never tired, rarely sore, losing weight, tightening up, my clothes fit better, I always am smiling... no more mood swings like i was having when i was eating a mostly carb diet... I was always giddy or depressed... and now I'm steady & confident & consistently happy. that alone is worth it's weight in protein...
as far as "starvation mode" basically is this... if you are so seriously low in cal & there's no protein, your organs will looking for protein to function & maintain & it will burn protein from your protein source aka... your muscles... I try not to eat my workout calories... but I fuel myself with protein. Carbs provide a quick boost in energy & burn out fast... or store quickly as fat... proteins work to build your muscle which is the living tissue that needs the fuel... either from food or fat storage... your body won't tap into your fat storage until it's out of carbs first... and it uses protein for repairing the muscle tissue...
At minimum eat your Goal calories... if it's largely quality protein & enough fruits & veg to be getting nutrients you need, you'll know it because YOU WILL FEEL WELL! If you're hungry later, have a protein snack... if you're not hungry don't eat.... your body is going to tell you what u need as u go... but if you are loading up w carbs u go through the cycle of blood sugar... insulin reaction... then the high insulin your body says you need more sugar & it's an endless cycle.. takes a few days to break that cycle and move into a natural carb & high protein lifestyle...
think about this... what is it made of? what's in this? what does my body need to get through this workout or recover from that one???? it's not hard once you start reading labels & keeping your food diary... you'll start noticing the difference in the way you feel. you'll start thinking ...apple 80 cal... all carb packed w vitamins & enzymes... YES... apple fritter 220 cal all carb mostly sugar no nutrient value 20g fat... NO
You don't have to be LOW anything... just the RIGHT kind of things... set your % goals to what makes ur metabolism run high and get your carbs from fruits & veg... not donuts & pie. get plenty of protein because your body needs it for the build & repair process... and if you're switching to better more nutritious, natural whole foods, you will automatically be dropping fat intake & what you take in will be the kinds that your body needs for well function...
I hope this helped answer some of your questions... add me if you like.0 -
Thanks for this. Its very good food for the old thought factory. Start to more research . Pretty good for the back of a box0

Tue 05/17/11 02:21 AMHey man, I am not criticizing the atkins. If it works for you stick with it. That's good you're focused on healthy fats. Low carb diets leaves muscles flat, and takes away their power because they have no glycogen (sugar/carbs). Guess what the majority of your brain runs on? Carbs... Consider this, it's called the CKD diet. IF you're in atkins you probably know, that ketosis is what the atkins is all about. If you don't know, ketosis is when you're using fat for energy cause your muscles have no glycogen. Don't want to make it too complex, there is more to it than that, but it puts a lot of stress on the kidneys.
The CKD diet, is when you eat high protien how you have been doing, you stay under 30grams of carbs a day, On Saturday and sunday you eat up those carbs, unlimited amounts. This gives you the benefits of the atkins, with out the negative side affects.0 -

You sent me the same thing in email and i replied. No i am eating high protein and high fat, for 2 days(low calorie). Then on day 3, I eat high calorie high carb. Yes it's going good 15lbs in 2 weeks. I Knew about htis protien and fat for a long time. The thing with the atkins diet... is the issues with it, it does have health issues. That's why I am not on the atkin diets consistently. That's why I cycle my carbs.0 -
