So last night I tried this recipe for the first time. It was really good, but I felt like it was missing something in the sauce. Does anyone have any suggestions???\

* 2 tsp. olive oil
* 1 medium onion, chopped (11/2 cups)
* 2 cloves garlic, minced (2 tsp.)
* 1 lb. extra-firm tofu, crumbled
* 1 8-oz. can water chestnuts, drained and chopped
* 1 bunch green onions, thinly sliced
* 4 Tbs. low-sodium soy sauce
* 4 Tbs. hoisin sauce
* 1 to 2 tsp. vegetarian chile sauce, such as vegetarian sriracha
* 16 butter lettuce or iceberg lettuce leaves

1. Heat oil in a wok over medium-high heat. Cook the onions, carrots, green onions, and garlic for 5 to 7 minutes, or until lightly brown. Add the tofu, water chestnuts, Hoisin, and soy sauce, stirring frequently until heated through. Remove from heat, and stir in the sesame oil and chile paste.
2. To serve: spoon a small amount of rice into each lettuce leaf, top with the stir-fry mixture, and drizzle with additional soy sauce or hoisin, if desired. Wrap the lettuce leaf to enclose the filling.
These may be used in place of or in addition to the tofu: chopped peanuts, peppers, shrimp, rice noodles, diced chicken, scrambled egg or bean sprouts

    To me, it looks like it's missing something sweet and citrusy. Maybe a splash of orange juice?

    Try adding a couple tablespoons of rice wine vinegar, a tablespoon of lemon juice, a teaspoon of garlic and red chile paste and a tablespoon of hot mustard. For the "sweet," yes, either a couple tablespoons of OJ, or a couple tablespoons of sugar dissolved in hot water.

    I second the ginger, and would suggest a bit of toasted sesame oil. For a more Thai flavor, add some peanut butter to the sauce, along with some fish sauce to replace some of the soy. Some cilantro would go well if you like it.

    I love the tofu lettuce wraps from P.F. Changs, so one day I decided to ask how they made them. Apparently the secret is in the tofu. They use baked Chinese 5-spice tofu. You can purchase it at Whole Foods and Trader Joe's and some regular grocery stores carry it as well.

    It looks like this, but you want the 5-spice flavor: http://www.caitlinliveswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/P1000650.jpg
