Hi Guys

I read with interest both of your passionate views about weight loss and in particular the contenscious issue of "to eat or not to eat "exercise calories.

The jury is out with me at the moment - I haven't been losing by eating back my exercise calories.

I am wondering if there are enough of us out there whether we could run a "not very scientific experiment" and whether you two would want to be "team captains" and support some of us through a month long weight loss challenge??

Ladyhawk00 running a team who eat back exercise calories and asmcriminal running a team who don't. We could publish results on 1st July?

Just a thought. Neither of you will ever agree and we will continue to see you both strongly putting forward your views on other peoples post. So how about we see what happens when we put both theories to the test?

In the end everybody is different and you have to go with what works for you. Thats really the plain & simple of it.

Sounds a good idea as I don't eat mine back but would love to see a true test of these theories as I'm not sure what to do. The only fair way to do it though surely is to have the same number on each team and each member has a member in the opposite team with very similar weight / fat ratio and doing same amount of exercise as well. This could be tricky.

you're absolutely right. It's taken me months to figure out what works for, i'm hoping I've finally got it!! LOL

    Good idea!!
Just one problem that i can see. Not every BODY is the same. For some eating them all back works, it did for me for a while. Now i only eat back some of them. Others will only lose if they don't eat any of them at all. SO, i think people should just try it out for themselves. See what works for them.

While I agree that all bodies are different, there is a little bit of science to back up what works and what doesn't. If this experiment happens, everybody who participates will be in different places in their weight loss. Some will be at a plateau. Some will be actively losing. Some people will hit a plateau in the middle of the experiment and eating back their calories or not eating them back will not have any bearing on whether they break the plateau. Some people on a plateau are eating back their exercise calories but doing too much cardio, or strength, or both, and thus, eating back their calories has nothing to do with the plateau or their weight loss. It's the overindulgence in exercise that's causing the problem.

I adhere to eating back calories, but that's only a small part of the weight-loss process.

However, I would be interested in seeing the results.

The main reason eating them back works for some and not for others is due to overestimating energy expenditure and/or underestimating food intake.

I don't burn what the machines say I do. I burn maybe 100-200 per session, not the 300-500 the gym machines and MFP say. So I have to eat much, much less than the "standard" to avoid overeating. I only learned this when I bought a FitBit.

I would agree but I use a HRM which is meant to be pretty accurate and I don't lose when I eat my exercise cals. Fundamentally though I think it is very individual.

...in different places in their weight loss.

I think these are some of the main points that can affect the results of eating back exercise calories.

For me it works, I wear a KiFit - so I know pretty accurately how many calories I've burned during exercise
I have over 30 lbs to lose.... more like another 50 lbs....
I do cardio and strength training - cardio no more than 450 calorie burn & strength is 150 - 275 calories
I work out 6 days a week with one rest day.... the rest day is actually quite important for me, because I can lose 1 to 1.5 lbs just from having one.....

MFP is set up for people to eat the calories.... that is what the daily allowance calculation is based on.... so I don't see why there is an 'argument'....
