Accuracy of a watch only HRM???

I have a watch style HRM made by New Balance that is an HRM, pedometer, step counter, stop watch, regular watch, etc. and I've checked that I have it all set correctly. I know that I have my stride in here correctly as the distance I log with the watch matches a treadmill pretty closely. It's also fairly close to what the treadmill shows as far as calorie burn goes, even though the only info I put into the treadmill or elliptical machine is my current weight and the watch asked for weight, height, age, gender, etc..

I am questioning the accuracy of the calorie burning capabilities of this now however, as my BMR is 1447.

Given that 24 hours = 1440 minutes, that would mean that, according to the page that has the BMR description on it, if I was to lay in bed and do nothing else, I would burn close to 1 calorie per minute.

As a test of my HRM watch, I put it on while working and I've been seated for the last 10 minutes wearing it while working and it shows that I have not yet burned even one calorie?

I'm wondering if it will not calculate calories accurately unless I'm actively using the pedometer function? That b/c the pedometer is triggered by the motion/movement of my steps, if the calorie tracking it is doing for me really is not as accurate as I thought it was?

Has anyone else had experience using both kinds? Results??
